Suggestion for camping rig

Hey fellow dirty barfers, I'm trying to find more information on starting a new project for my next vehicle. Only downside is there isn't much info I can find on what I want to do.

Basically I'd like to have some sort of small to mid size suv to sleep inside of while camping, and I also plan to get an ultimate MX hauler so I don't have to deal with a trailer all the time.

I am dead set on getting a honda element because of it versatility, but for the model and platform I want, it feels out of my reach at the moment. The other idea I have would be getting a late 90s Chevy Blazer, but I want to keep my options open for other possibilities as well.

So what else would be good for hitch carrier and sleeping inside of? :ride

What kind of budget are you looking at? What kind of bike will go on the back?

I had a 2005 element and loved the thing. One draw back is that the hitch capacity (I think it was 350lb tongue weight/3500lb towing), so a full size 4 stroke is hitting that upper limit with the mx hauler. You can save some weight by getting a lighter hitch carrier. Another thing that sucked is that the seats, mainly driver since it gets the most use, end up tearing at the seams.

Were you planning on sleeping on the fold flat seats? or fold them out of the way and lay on the floor? The seats don't fold completely flat so it isn't exactly like a bed.

With that being said, I would still own it if I didn't have needs that it couldn't meet. I need to seat 5, and get commuter MPG (although I no longer have that need).

Blazer you say. I like my Four Wheel Campers. The Blazer units are hard to find but the ones that fit in a pick up are available used.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I guess I could have been more specific, but I sold my v8 and want to get a v6 or smaller, since the v8 was overkill for what I was doing, so gaining more mpgs will go a long ways as most of the good dirtbiking/camping spots are an hour out or more in each direction from here in SJ. That pretty much rules out most Ford and Chevy cargo vans since they're usually a v8 if there's room to put a bike in the back of it. I suppose it would be safer than a hitch carrier..

I also have another 2500 with a camper shell which is very roomy to sleep in the back of it, but I want to move onto something where I can access everything from where I sleep, so cargo vans or suvs would work in that case.

My budget now only works for the smaller blazers, as they are usually on the cheaper side. I spoke with a buddy about wanting an element, which he proceeded to find a bunch of ads for ones under $5k, but I really want to get a newer model EX with awd and manual transmission. Which trim did you have? If I recall my research correctly, the EX trim had the weather tech seats that were good in all seasons, maybe didn't have the tearing issue? i feel with any car, use creates wear and tear

I plan to haul my xr350 by itself as it is usually only me, and if a girl ever came along, I doubt she'd ride also. If it were the case, then I could bust out the trailer. When I go farther forward with my ideas, I will speak with my buddy who runs a fabrication shop, I'm sure we can engineer a overkill hitch to support that weight on the back over long drives

And I've seen pics of people sleeping on the seats folded down, doesn't look very comfortable.. The floor space is great for quick overnight camping. I love how the seats fold up or you can take them out, would be perfect for everyday use for myself

I guess both these pics are the best representations of what I want to do right now

Gotta Chrysler "mini-van" model "Town & Country." Has towing package or you can fit 2-3 bikes in it if you remove seats. We just used a trailer & tossed gear/5 friends in it & that did the trick. I'll have to get you a pic:

Paints old/shot, 160K needs a quite few things but runs fine for around towner or short runs. I've never taken it further than Sears Point/Thunderhill/Laguna Sega for trackdays. Guy I got it from was a District 36 dirt enduro guy so he had lots of freeway miles going to distant races.

Only thing I ever did was a 100K "Service" radiator flush, oil change, etc. A/C got a leak in the back window area, never fixed due to cost. So that's it, nice bike hauler w/all the goodies the T&C comes w/just needs a few mechanicals. Runs great.

pm if interested.....$3K

Mine was a 2wd EX. The plastic floor and weather proof seats were awesome, especially for baby puke. Mine only had 66k miles when I bought it and the seats were torn at the seams. The previous owner was pretty large at about 6'4" and 230ish pounds, so that could have played a part. Although my cousin is about 5'5" and 140lbs and it happened to his as well. Not sure how many miles it took for his to tear.

The xr350 would be close to the upper tongue limit, although I am sure it can hold a little more than the limit.

And you are right about the fold away seats. When I moved I was able to pack boxes floor to ceiling in there. Probably fit more than my ~6' bed on my Tacoma can.

If you can find a Ford E150 van with a 6cyl that isn't all beat up it would fill your needs nicely. They run forever, are cheap and easy to fix, and get surprisingly good mpg.

I was using a conversion van for a while. it was great for camping but I didnt want a 3rd vehicle. So I bought a Ram Eco Diesel crew cab. Down side is it is only 5.5' bed but the back seat folds down flat and makes for a great little spot to sleep. I am 6'2" so it is a little tight but it works and I get almost 30mpg.
