Stomp grip does not stick

Ok, just for the hell of it I bought a stomp grip a few weeks ago. However, after cleaning my tank and installing it I found that it didn't want to remain on the tank. It sort of peels off.

Any ideas on how to keep it on the bike? Thanks.

What did you clean the tank with?

I've used a few stomp grips and never had issue with them staying on. This is both plastic and metal tanks.

Rubbing alcohol, let it fully dry and personally I’ve always used the sun or a heat gun (on low) to heat the tank and material slightly before applying. Never had a problem.

If the tank grips are old stock sometimes the adhesive goes bad.

This. I just had the same experience as OP but I know the new-to-me StompGrips were sitting around for a while (years) in their packaging before I got to put them on. It clearly had the backing paper from 3M and it all looked good, but I am pretty sure the adhesive was past it's prime.

On a positive note it looks like I can clean this old stuff off the back of the grips and buy new adhesive sheets or spray-on stuff to basically re-use the StompGrips.

Is this advisable? Anyone here have experience re-using StompGrip brand tank grips?

Go to a hardware or boat store that sells 3M Safety-Walk Medium Duty Tread tape, and get the 4" wide stuff. 2 feet will cover any tank and cost you about $5. You can put it right where you need it. Clean your tank with 3M Adhesive and Wax remover BEFORE you put on the tape and it will stick.

Thanks a bunch. I will try the last solution. I came home Saturday evening and one was lying on my garage floor! It was hot, but I didn't expect it to fall off completely.

The glass cleaner left more on than you cleaned. It doesnt even clean glass well. Pretty sure instructions call for isopropyl alcohol...oh well...time to buy a new set...

I had an older set that didn't stick. A call to Stomp Grip resolved my issues promptly. Why.old stock won't stick is beyond me but they stood behind their product nicely.

Unless you want shredded jeans/leathers, I don't recommend using this stuff. It ruined a perfectly good suit. :mad

contact them. they'll mail you new ones.

I've been using them for a decade on many bikes. all of them have plastic tanks. several early sets I installed came off after a year of so.

the ones I installed 5 years ago are still good. problem is they yellow with age. even though this bike is parked in the garage 99.5% of the time.

that other brand, tech spec isn't any better. The pads' material hardens. I had to use some 3m adhesive to reapply. even then it came off after a couple years. fell off a few days ago on my way home from laguna.

consider them a wear item just like anything made of rubber...

This is why I really like the TechSpec X line. Has a neoprene type finish and doesn't ruin my leathers or textiles.

3M spray adhesive will make them stick on, but it will be a nightmare of a mess when you eventually take them back off. Trust me.

Did you use the medium grade? If you used the heavy grade, then yes, you'll shred your clothes. I've never had a problem with the medium grade. And the light grade kinda works.
