Sportbikes blocking lanes on Hwy 85

Go2Trackdays

No speed limits or cars!
Yesterday afternoon I was driving south on 85 just past hwy 17 - four sportbikes had just rolled onto 85 coming from Santa Cruz.

Two of the two-up riders for some reason decided to cruise next to each other at 70ish in the #1 and #2 lanes, causing a backup of cars behind them. Some cars and trucks went around by going into the slow lane and passing on the right.

If you've driven on 85, you KNOW that 70ish is NOT the average speed in the fast lane -

So I was sitting there wondering WTF is wrong with just cruising in the #2 lane staggered (behind each other), so they weren't blocking the fast #1 lane :confused

There is no such thing as a "fast lane".

The speed limit is 65, and a cop would probably let 70MPH go. All the cagers that were passing faster then 70MPH were breaking the law and should be cited accordingly.

I know what you are saying, but unfortunately they were doing nothing illegal...
in fact could be pulled over for speeding.
BTW: I am not nor will be affiliated with said riders....

That's the difference between here and Germany. Regardless of speed limit, in Germany you GTFO of the lane if someone behind you wants to go faster. Moving to the right and keeping faster traffic on the left is safer for everyone compared to faster traffic having to weave around cars, which you know they are going to do despite the speed limit. I don't really want fast cars catching up to me and getting frustrated.

I wish people would just move over instead of cruise and think, "I'm going the speed limit already, so deal with it". That attitude seems nothing but selfish to me.

With all respect this is one of the most fucked things I have read on this site.

Slower traffic keep right.

If faster traffic is approaching from behind, get over to the right.

Very simple.

Agree with BudBandit wholeheartedly (imagine that). Anyone that feels they are obligated to slow traffic in the left lane should be beaten seveely.

Californians are fucking clueless about the concept of KEEP RIGHT, PASS LEFT and it's pretty severely annoying.

While slower traffic shuld keep right, you should be aware that anything over 75mph-ish on 85 will probably net you a ticket. They were probably aware of this and didn't want to push their luck. Still, they really should have moved over if they were holding traffic.

The Union Ave onramp onto southbound 85 usually has a CHP parked and waiting for anyone going much faster than the speed limit. I thought most people were aware of that.

Impeding the flow of traffic is also citeable, and they should have been cited accordingly.:x

If there is a long line of cars backed up behind you, move over. Whether it be a turn-out, or a lane to the right, yield. It has nothing to do with the speed limit, and everything to do with courtesy.

We were going by Union more in the 80ish range, and then they slowed down. At that point nobody was crowding up behind them. Later they pulled off on Santa Teresa

I thought that motorcyclists would be more aware than your average cager about being a rolling roadblock in lane #1 and I don't think they were trying to be Road Cop, seemed more like some kind of 'tude about "we DO own the road"

Just be glad you were doing 70 on HWY 85. Every time I'm on there I'm doing about 20 most of the way.

Those "bikers" are total assholes and should have their licenses revoked and be invited to a SOCK PARTY.

yeh, that's what you'd THINK!!

The old Maiden bombed home from Reno yesterday and ended up going all the way from Reno to Sacto the ENTIRE way in the right lane.

Which was EMPTY.

The fukn cages and trucks towing BOATS and everyone were all just stacked up in the left lane. The only vehicles in the right lane were the rigs.

And the right lane over the pass is uneven and scraped to shit. Given the Maiden's GIRTH and the constant bouncing of the BELLY, the breathing inside my helmet sounded like a FREIGHT TRAIN under steam.

Good news was: even lanesplitting from Sacto to Vacaville, the trip time from Reno, NV to San ROCKfalafel, CA was 3:38!! :)

Still a n00b.
IMO, its a double sided blade.
Yes, slow keep to the right, but if you're following the posted speed, I can't complain.

To be fair, the right lane of I80 is completely torn up around Truckee. The wheel ruts in the pavement are at least an inch deep.

Has anyone here ever driven in Florida? Geez, you think it's bad here......... the seniors there all drive their fucking Crown Victorias and Grand Marquis at 34 mph in the LEFT LANE down there. It's insane.

Someone should start an urban legend that you get better cell phone reception in the right lanes....because you get less crosstalk interference from people travelling in the other direction. :)
