Sport touring tires?

I just picked up a 690smc. The distanzias on it now are about done and I may buy some wheels so want to throw on some new rubber at the same time.

I ride street only and I have never had a problem with sport touring tires on my bigger bikes, but am concerned about putting them on a 300lb. bike that will be used primarily on goaty twisties.

What are other street tarders running? What about doing a road 4 on the rear and a power 3 on the front or a similar set-up?

The best setup i've ever used were always sticky rain tires up front, and an SM specific tire in the rear. (Conti Attack, Conti-SM, Distanzia SM compound, etc)

While that is not always the best option (front rains only last me about a month--I used to run rains front and rear, and the rear would be done after several rides)

The 2nd best option is getting a set of Conti-Attack SM tires.

Remember, SM specific tires are made for lightweight bikes, and have the tire profile to match the rake of an SM bike.

The 3rd best option is getting sportbike street tires, like Pilot Power, S20, Q3, etc..

You'll get mild longevity out of that ~ 2000miles for rear, but you'll have to drop pressures accordingly ~ 28 PSI, and the feel will really depend on the sidewall stiffness, compound, and tire profile. I put on a set of S20s, and they feel great for my 690.

I would put the sport touring tires in the same category. I've heard a lot of folks running like a Power Pure front (stickier) and a Pilot Road 4 in the rear for longevity.

Be like water My friend..
I've tried mix and match tires and could feel the profile difference from front to back which made me hesitant to push the bike. I think you'd be happy with a set of PP3's. They hook up well in the wet, and are not made heavy touring bikes.

Just my 2cents,

You can run ST tires front/rear or mix-n-match with Sport/ST tires.

Just lower the tire pressures down into the suitable 26-28psi range and adjust the psi up/down until things feel right.

Michelin Pilot Road4's would be my ST tire recommendation.

i was running PP3 and 22-24 lbs of pressure on my 500 exc and it was amazing...it is quite a bit lighter than a 690 so maybe a few more lbs of air would be neccessary but those tires were awesome.

Plenty sticky, comes in a 150/70/17, dunno about longevity yet, bike has developed a short somewhere about 250 miles into the tires.
