Split between 2 bikes, need advice!

I keep flopping back and forth between these 2 bikes. I'd like some input from the peanut gallery to see if there's anything I haven't thought of.

2012 GSXR600, 6k miles, salvaged title, everything repaired, yoshi slip-on, frame sliders. $5600

2012 ZX6R, 1.2k miles, clean title, yoshi slip on, front/rear stands. $6700

The GSXR costs more for insurance and I'm debating whether saving $1.1k is worth the peace of mind and loss in resale values. But I've always liked the look of GSXRs the best out of all 600s since the headlights don't look like bugs.

Appreciate the bike comparisons, but I've already done the research and have ridden both. More interested in opinions regarding salvage vs. clean title, and also what you think of the price(s).

Give me some of your thoughts! TIA. :teeth

First off, slap a poll on this thread. Secondly, I oppose all sport bikes made by Suzuki. Having ridden them, they are very average to me in all categories. The Kawi might not be comfy, or stop as well, but it will make up for it in handling and looks. I prefer to have love/hate relationships with my bikes where I love some things and hate others.

The salvage title will REALLY a hurt the resale value of the Gsxr in the future unless you want to keep it forever (which I doubt). I would only buy salvage if it was a track only bike. The zx6r is nice but if you can find a 2013 for a good price you'll get the fancy traction control they put on it.

I'd go kawi just for the clean title. I imagine a few years down the road with more miles and some scratches, a salvaged titled gsxr wont be worth much. However, the resale value on my gf's kawi is pretty weak. But it will always be easier to sell a clean titled bike vs a salvage titled one.

Yeah I can't figure out why, but the Kawis seem to do really poor on resale values.

I think it has more to do with guys being more familiar with the gsxr and r6 brands and models. my gf's 08 zx6r has 42k commute miles and two track days and its had nothing but oil changes and a valve adjust. The only down side is its crappy resale. If she ever buys a new one, it'll just get turned into a track bike.

what is the purpose of this bike? street only? street and track? track only?

If you will eventually turn it into a track only bike, then the gsxr, b/c you won't be selling it down the rode.

If you (probably will) sell it later in life, then the kawi.

There are no bargains in life. Meaning that it is salvaged, and maybe fixed but you don't really know the totality of the damage...

Also, you might find a better deal if you wait longer. The weather is getting cold, prime riding season is almost over and christmas is coming, so you may see some deals, here and on CL.

Irrespective of the models or your riding preference, I'd go with the Kawi.

It has less miles, has a clean title, "assume" it was more well-cared for, and it's cheaper to insure. If a bike was more expensive to insure vs. a competitor, I'd really want it to be a clean title (why pay more for insurance on a salvaged bike?).

If this is a primary bike, you know there will be less future hassles working on a clean bike versus a salvaged (even if it's was restored to stock, there may be some corners cut).

Another option would be to wait a bit longer for the bike you really want without a salvage title. With the season winding down you are more likely to find a better price as well. Just my :2cents

Lol just ask the op what he paid for it originally,

Back in 09 when they debut the new zx6 with bpf, i had a coworker who was transferring from oregon to cali - raced wera had a dealership lined up to sell me a brand new zx6 for under $7k, i was gonna turn it into a track bike and never title and pay for tax and reg in cali,

Historically speaking kawi is usually the cheapest msrp in their market segments, combined with the smLlest market share deLers have to blow them out under msrp all the time just to move inventory

I also remember a friend of a friend getting a 09 zx6r monster edition for barely over $7k here in cali brand new said dealer couldnt move the green monster emblems and nobody bought it so he got it at huge discou t and removed the monster logos himself lol

Thanks everyone for the advice! These are all good.

So you guys all think that $6.7k is high for the Ninja? I was thinking it was a pretty good deal.

Personally, if they were new it would be a tougher choice. But the salvage title makes it a no-brainier between these two.

I looked and the Kelly blue book for the Kawasaki ZX6R for the that year is currently $7,260. Given the low miles, and if its in good condition, take the plunge! :)

^ also, you hafta remember kawi completely changed it in 2013, back to a 636, which is why the price is probably a little lower.

I've always purchased used bikes for the halfway difference between trade-in price and dealer price (7260) which would put this bike closer to $6.1-6.2k. But I know the halfway rule isn't always applicable to newer bikes. That's why I wanted to ping the crowd. :thumbup

Are you able to insure a salvaged vehicle beyond the state minimum? I was always under the impression you couldn't.

It depends on the insurance company. Some won't insure salvage at all, some will do min and only pay out small amount, and some will insure the full. Mine (USAA through Progressive) said they would insure it for full amount.
