speeding ticket fine

I got a speeding ticket for 60 in a 55 (I was doing closer to 70 but cop gave me a break) and the fine is $235 ($285. with traffic school). I haven't had a ticket in awhile but the fine seems a bit high for just 5 mph over. Should I see the judge and try to get the fine reduced or just man up and pay it? Happened on hwy 29 in Lake County, I was on my way home from work late at night...nobody on the road except me...and a chp officer:(.

Guess you could try. Most bail schedules have one fine for 1-15mph, another for 16-25 and a final one for 26+... Or thats the way it is in the county I work in. That may be why you think the fine seems high.

60 in a 55 is BS. I once got pulled over for 27 in a 25. Again BS.

I used to bow fish with a chp officer, started bitchin to him about a bogus ticket I thought I got. He asked me "How many times where you riding fast and didn't get stopped, just shut up, be polite and figure it's your turn to get a ticket" made me think about it. He was right. Have been ticket free for 15 years! Well till I yelled at that officer last week, forgot the shut up part :x

When I plead on guilty.. and I always do.. judge always offered me to change my plea to no contest and reduce the fine.

Now I am not sure how that affects traffic school..

Can't do both in Santa Cruz County.

FYI 1 to 15 mph over the limit is all the same fine, so you didn't get cut a break unless your "closer to 70" was really "over 70." The cop probably just said he was cutting you a break so you felt a little better and were thus less likely to go crazy at him. :laughing

Did that changed? I know Santa Clara is that way, but when I was in Santa Cruz County, they allowed that.... but, that was 6 years ago. :dunno

I got nailed like 8 months ago... went to the arraignment, right up there on the wall, "You may not ask for both traffic school and a fine reduction." Yet some people still asked the judge. :laughing

Groveland, where's that?

Ohhhhhh, they most changed it.....

I remember a traffic case I had there.

First a TBD... guilty.

Then a trial de novo..... guilty.

Then an appeal... guilty.

Then, "can I have traffic school and reduction?".... granted. :facepalm

If there was anything else I could have done to weasel my way out of that epic fine I would have done it... :laughing

I have always fought any citation. Id say that I have won at least 75% for various reasons.
When I lived in South Lake, the wife and I were in the Mustang up on the west shore, when there was a passing zone. 1 car in front & 1 in back (CHP Lt, unmarked car). I make the pass, CHP lights me up. Said that I didn't complete the pass in time before I hit the double yellow.
Went to court were I was at a decided disadvantage VS the Lt. I tell the judge my story, Lt. does the same, judge belives the Lt. and finds me guilty. Then it occurred to me that the Lt. couldn't clearly see when I completed the pass due to the other car between us. Judge was impressed with my inner Matlock, found me guilty but suspended the sentence.

Woohoo! I won!

Fight every one you get.

Just visited traffic court in Oakland to see about the possibility of traffic school and a reduction in fine. Before calling anyone's case, the judge made it abundantly clear he was not going to entertain any requests to reduce fines except for fix-it tickets where proof of correction was provided. And my bid for traffic school was nixed even though I have not taken traffic school for over 10 years since the ticket was more than 25 mph over the posted limit.

May have had better luck getting a reduction in another court but it's all said and done now.
