South Carolina Bills Could Mandate NRA-Created Gun Education in Public Schools

"A pair of bills filed in each house of South Carolina’s legislature aim to eliminate the zero-tolerance attitude towards guns in schools by allowing or even mandating gun safety and Second Amendment-related curricula."

"Under Clemmons’ proposed bill, one-third of an existing nine-week educational unit dedicated to the U.S. Constitution would now be centered on education related to the Second Amendment..."

Bias disclosure: I'm generally for most gun rights, though I don't own any firearms and I'm not particularly fond of the totalitarian mindset of the NRA.

I'm torn about these bills. I see value in them for people who would want their kids to take the classes. For people that don't, I have to think mandating them would probably just make people even more hateful. I think it would lead to protests, as well. And while I don't doubt the NRA would be capable of helping draft the curricula, having them do so seems somewhat propagandaish to me. My guess is the original bill proposes so much time on the second amendment knowing it will be shortened during debate.

Discuss.

This is fucking awesome. The ownership and basic ability to use firearms is the civic responsibility of all Americans. I have advocated for YEARS it should be a part of middle school education. I mean Marksmanship used to be something many schools had available as an elective. I believe that NV and AZ currently have, "Firearms Safety," electives available in their schools.

That being said, just move this thing to Politics subforum now.

Civics isn't already mandatory? Or do they just call it something else now?

Mainly not a part of curriculum now in most states in any meaningful fashion. Yet people wonder why we have a nation of disenfranchised dumbasses.

Given how we coddle immigrants, I guess it makes sense that Civics was the first to go.

I imagine a civics curriculum developed in an age of partisan political school boards, the same folks who push creationism in science textbooks, might not lead to the kind of skeptical, critical voters you might hope for.

Oh fuck yeah, just like teh good ol USSR!! They taught everyone how to assemble an AK-47. About time Americans learn something good from us Soviets!

Now I believe they teach everyone the basics of AK-74 and how to assemble it, along with how to put on a gas mask and other fun stuff. All paired with studying and memorizing the constitution.

It's not too often you get to put your fingers directly into any school system and while I do personally enjoy firearms quite a bit, I'd much rather see them introduce some sort of course on critical thinking.

That would be counterproductive to the politicians and government.
