So...how are things in Cali these days?

Fellow BARFians,
I was born in Utah but grew up in the Elk Grove/Sacramento area. Loved my time there for the most part. Great weather, great roads for riding year round. Being in Sac the only real question on the weekends was are we heading to the mountains or the coast? Bugged out about 10 years ago due to high property taxes, and watching my neighborhood go down hill fast. Decided I didn't want to raise my kids there.

So we moved back to Utah. Bought a house with more than double the square footage for the same price as my place in Elk Grove. Property tax is less than half of what I was paying in CA. Got my concealed carry permit in literally 4 hours but haven't felt like I really needed it. And, since moving back to Utah I haven't had anything stolen, which took a bit of getting used to lol. We love it here. Good neighbors, excellent out door options like Moab, Zions, etc. The only real negative is having to shovel snow occasionally and the cold months seem to drag on in the spring.

That said.....sometimes I think about heading back to Cali. Then I read about the increase in homeless in SF and LA, people leaving in droves, etc, etc. Maybe these are more of headlines that don't represent the rest of the state.

So I wanted to ask you guys. What's it like these days? No biggie? Thinking of leaving? Couldn't be happier?

Penny for your thoughts,

Justin

PS: not meant to be a political discussion. They are what they are. Some like Cali politics and some don't. We can leave it at that. The weather's still fantastic either way.

We'll all be dead from lung cancer in ten more years, so maybe sit tight for a little longer and then everything in Charcoalfornia will be cheap.

It's great from a Salary/Weather perspective, but I'm hoping to retire in a few years and sell my two homes in a place that allows me to have a couple of acres and hike and fish -- A LOT!!!!

Do they allow Black people in Utah?

:thumbup Utah is very beautiful in some places.

I guess you didn't live in the bay area, but I gotta ask about a fear I have of getting bored if I leave. Do you have plenty to do, lots of choices in restaurants...like, the good stuff Cali has to offer?

thanks

I left two years ago because it was just too crowded for me. By the time I could actually leave (needed 2 years in my second house for tax purposes) I couldn't wait to get out of there. Utah is too crowded for me as well. :x

So, I've been wondering if someone from Utah would explain how the new lane splitting law is working out. The two or three times I visited Utah since it passed I didn't see a single rider doing it. But a ton of them riding without helmets. Idaho is better as far as helmet usage on motorcycles, by the way.

Saratoga Springs? Of course you could get a big house for cheap out there. :laughing

I would say there is enough to do out here but the food just isn't the same. Even if it's the same restaurant the food is terrible by comparison.

The lane splitting thing is new here. I think it only applies to walking the bike up between cars at a stoplight. Not like CA at all unfortunately.

True there is no helmet law but I would wear one anyway personally. Saratoga Springs was better priced when I bought but prices have gone way up in the past few years. Silicon slopes is what they are calling it.

Worse now more than ever.

The homeless thing is no hyperbole, my neighborhood in South San Jose is just fucking overrun.

This is just a few miles down the street from me. https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2020/09/04/homeless-camp-dump-site-union-pacific-san-jose/

The good news is our bitch of a sheriff and her cronies are finally getting exposed to the sunlight about the CCW corruption, but even then I doubt she'll see any time and I doubt Santa Clara County is gonna start issuing CCWs to the masses anytime soon. https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2...ses-rocks-santa-clara-county-sheriffs-office/

I'm done. I bought a house in Nevada last month. Moving within a year. Just need to wrap a few things up here.

Cali lifer... who is getting more frustrated.

The new "pay to play" lanes on the freeway is just one of the many money grabs that seem to be increasing. Fees for everything, hiding out from being called taxes.

I have family here so hard to leave, but at this point I want too.

Do love the weather and yes the moto roads (freeways suck in many places).

Good to hear you diggin Utah. :port

Are there lots of Asian Indian Americans in Utah? If so, which cities? What about BYU? I would like to visit there sometime as a tourist but I’ve heard of horror stories of Asian Indians being mistaken as terrorists by drunk people and getting harassed and attacked.

I’m new to California and I love the weather and clean air here. Even now, compared to India, this place is paradise all the way. Traffic is also very organized and civil; not chaotic at all. The education system is less stressful and your kids will have an easy time getting good marks. I think it’s worth it coming back. The only thing I don’t like is the crime rate going up.

Nah, they do that in Idaho, not Utah. :laughing

Actually, people from other countries and cultures are generally well received in Utah. But some people in Idaho can get upset if you tell them that you came from California. I've only met a couple of them personally - so far.
