Skyline Sinkhole (CA 35)????

Gary856

Are we having fun yet?
35's closed 5 miles north of Hwy 9, but they've set up a traffic light there and it looks like they'll soon allow alternate two-way traffic using one lane. (Forgot to bring my phone for the ride so no pic. :facepalm)

Took my '82 Honda Passport up Page Mill Road. 7hp of goodness. Can you believe a Prius, Civic and Audi A6 all let me pass during my struggle up the hill :rofl Funny because she's a gutless 3-speed with a top speed of 42mph on level ground and struggles in 2nd @ 9k rpm/25mph going up PMR. Weekend tourists seem to drive 20mph max and ride the brakes at the slightest curve in the road :nchantr so it makes for fun times.
Heres the closure at the PMR 35 intersection. I just rode around it.

On the way to the sink hole I saw this on the west side of the road. The first sign of any storm damage but the road is all cleaned up now.

Here's a shot looking directly at the slide area.

Cyclist and I were the only ones continuing southbound past Skyline Ridge (which was open for access).

Just past the entrance to Skyline Ridge we spoke to two workers prepping signage for a partial opening of the road.

Continuing our trek another 1/3 mile the road was blocked by signage and a worker sitting in his truck. He greeted us rubber-neckers and gave us some details. He said the road was still closed but mostly repaired already. Bicycle guy asked if he could take photos but was declined. Attendant informed of a dirt path detour for unmotorized vehicles just west and parallel to 35 that ran alongside the road and over some elevation. He said I could walk my scooter.

Bicyclist took the detour, I went back the way I came.

As of March 23, 2019 3:00pm, Skyline is open to through traffic. Signal lights metering one direction at a time. The northbound lane dropped about a 20-25' and what remains is shored up with steel reinforcement plates. Looks to me it's going to be a while until it's fully repaired.

p.s.
Heading up Page Mill saw oncoming driver completely miss a turn and plow into dirt hillside at about 20mph. :facepalm. The car sustained some front end damage but occupants okay :thumbup

Neighbors who live along Skyline confirm that it is now open single lane, with traffic light, 24x7. For a few days, it was open single lane only during working hours, but now you can go at night too.

The accident is quite typical: A lot of accidents in the mountains are single vehicle (2 or 4 wheels), vehicle versus hillside. Hillside tends to win. The most recent one at our house was last Tuesday: Minivan with mom and kid versus hillside. Kid was slightly damaged, but no ambulance ride was required (some bleeding, nothing dramatic); vehicle was totaled.

That's a sobering piece of information. What are divers thinking or rather not thinking? I saw the car continue straight with no regard for the turn in the road. It was rather surreal. He must have target fixated. Thankfully it was a single vehicle incident. I stopped to ask if they were okay. I could have asked WTH happened but he seemed rather embarrassed.

The incident underlines the benefits of having a helmet mounted camera. My GoPro 5 is chin-mounted and goes with me on every ride. The battery life and user interface are underwhelming but it works fine. I set mine to loop mode and 1080p @ 60fps.
