Should BARF have a warrant canary?

Is this something I should automatically know what you're talking about because reddit is as ubiquitous as seinfeld, which I also thought was lame?

Reddit has a transparency statement. It gets updated annually, usually.

In the past it included a paragraph that stated that as of Jan 29, 2015 Reddit had not been issued with a National Security Letter, or other process.

Yesterday, that paragraph went missing.

These NSL's are accompanied by a gag order, so you cannot say whether you have been served with one or what the details are.

The dead canary is the only way the site can indicate to the users about the situation.

So it's like the people I know that have security clearances that can't tell you they have one but if you ask them they can give you the name of the organization you would call to check?

When the USA-PATRIOT Act was first enacted, libraries would do the same thing with a sign. Interssting times we live in (and have been for almost a whole generation now)...

The only thing barf leaks is money.

We don't sell any info.
People have asked for our email list. = no.
People have asked that we do email list sponsor notifications = no.

Accountant says you need to write yourself a check to stay legal = yes ( and you're Fing kidding me!). I am trying to upgrade our add software a little bit, but finding it a slow road.

Not sure I understand this whole canary thing, but you know where I stand.

This is the FBI, with the power of the homeland security act, demanding and immediately forbidding barf from telling anyone about it, a gag order.

the "canary" is a statement that says something like "barf has never received an NSL demand" as part of a routine statement. When that portion of the statement is deleted, the assumption is an NSL has been received and technically the gag order not violated.

Dennis the canary thing would be, if you get a subpoena or a warrant with a gag order attached, and wanted to signal the membership. I can't imagine why barf would get either.

NSLs are still being challenged in court, FYI - a judge in SF district court ruled them a 1st amendment violation just last year, and was overturned with the case sent back down. As we all knew when the patriot act was first passed, that shit was here to stay, govts don't give power back.
