Should actors only portray their race/gender/sexuality/religion?

Maybe you don't remember OutLikeATrout, he was a dude that used to be in here all the time back in like 2005 talking about Jesus stuff. He really wanted to turn everything into a conversation about Christians, christian family values, and the like. Always trying to find perceived slights to accuse people of being anti-christian and trying to defend his paradigm no one cared about.

Eventually he stopped, because I assume he realized that even if a mildly relevant topic did come up as a platform for him, no one here is super invested in the topic and cared that much about getting deep on it and this isn't the place to find those kinds of conversations.

:dunno

not sure if he was this dude - but will never forget goose (one of my all time fav barfers - among many lol) giving someone shit about this. something along the lines of ‘why do you come here carrying on about jesus - it makes as much sense as if we went on jesus forums and carried on about motorcycles’. that’s not a direct quote (memory being what it is), and i didn’t do it justice - but that’s the gist of it.

I definitely remember his username, he's one of the oldschoolers. I also remember the feedback of "Do you go to christian forums and talk about motocycles?" but I always thought that was for randos who came around here and tried to fling christ at us. Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe I'm thinking of two different things.

Anyhow, I appreciate the feedback. I like discussing these topic here because otherwise my other option is on general social media - where ts either an echo chamber or turns toxic in an instant. And I'm well aware, again, I went too far with it a few pages ago.

One of the best lines on BARF ever!

sorry - missed this in my prior post. as i said, it was goose. he’s awesome - and i miss him here SO MUCH!

Yeah, that was something specific Ziad said to him that another dude liked so much, he put in his sig line so it stuck around for years and years.

I'm not saying you owed anyone an apology, or that you should not behave in any particular kind of way, but you certainly seem very comfortable calling people racists who are clearly operating in the non-racist category. You say you don't want to go troll Stormfront.org (is that still around?), because it gets rapidly toxic, but I don't see how picking fights with nonracists on a Bike forum is somehow better than just attacking actual racists online.

I guess the point is, if you are trying to have an actual conversation with nonracists, you are going to have to come to terms with the idea that their position is valid and acceptable, even if you do not agree with it personally and find your antiracist position to be more personally gratifying.

No, love, it was WackyIraqi that wrote it if I am not mistaken. I remember all of this pretty well, because his, "have a little faith" homophobic threads are the antithesis of my, "Do as thou wilt," Nihilism and I was kind of his arch nemesis in those threads. I would usually bombard them with Wall of Text responses in acres until he eventually gave up. The point rather than that trip down memory lane, is that this ain't the Holy Land here, so crusaders are barking up the wrong tree and should take that fight someplace where people want to have it.

omg dude - thanks so much for the reminder. i got to thinking afterwards that goose and i exchanged numerous PM’s (have to admit i fell madly in love with him) but we never actually met in person - and i was sure i remembered talking and laughing about this face to face - but you are right, it was with ziad. am mortified to have forgotten. it’s been so long since i connected with the crew. so many memories becoming vague. so many awesome peeps. and so many favs. speaking of which - i still remember nodding goodbye to beau the last time i saw him - after we flipped our face shields down at that red light and i watching him wheelie away when it turned green. he dusted my ass lol.

so many more i’d love to meet in person.

I think he cares about the topic itself.

The gender orientation is the half that I was focusing on. seems Tyler is interested in the dynamics of orientation-identification and how that plays out in the world of acting.

Thanks for the list, white dude.:thumbup
Progressive black entertainers that are good dudes?

That's a long list, my dude.

Idris Elba, Daveed Diggs, Michael B Jordan, Lakeith Stanfield, Lil Rel Howery, Trevor Noah, Boots Riley, Snoop Dog, Orlando Jones, Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman, Regina King, Viola Davis, Leslie Jones, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Chewitel Eijofor, Donald Glover, John Boyega, etc.

It's a start.

From a cisgender audience perspective, I think it makes perfect sense to feel like any actor can play any role. We have a deep roster of talented actors. And it wasn't that long ago in the course of grand human history that all actors in the theater were played by men - including women's roles!

But from the perspective of a non-cisgender audience (or cisgender trans-ally audience), casting a non- trans actor presents several missed opportunities: the opportunity for trans actors to represent themselves, the opportunity to cast a spotlight on new and rising talent, or the opportunity to present trans characters on screen as authentically as possible.

Ultimately though, it is acting - to echo the sentiment of so many folks here. And where I would like to see this end up is that a female role in a film can be competently portrayed by any female actress, whether that actress is trans or transgender. Same with any male role.

After all, Trans women are women, trans men are men.

if the trans actors are better than the non trans then go for it, otherwise it's just pandering

Totally! The best person to portray the role should do the job. Though I don't exactly trust the film industry to function as an egalitarian meritocracy. Nepotism is more their bag.

But I'd defer the judgment of pandering to the group being pandered to. After all, cishet white people are pandered to pretty much constantly, and most of the time they're totally cool with it.
