Shifting issues

Asking this for a friend. He says there are some throttle and shifting issues. The bike sometime s has a hard time getting out of neutral into 1st. He changed the oil and the clutch cable appears to be fine. This is a Triumph speed 4.

Clutch lever/cable slack adjustment set correctly?

Could be too much slack in the adjustment, not getting a full pull.

Darkness!

Where's the kick starter?
Or maybe cable is coming apart or frayed internally? You'll have to check if the cable is actually moving anything at the clutch end. Good luck.

The idle speed could be a bit high, or the drive chain too tight. If it has a linkage type shifter, it could be loose or have worn componants.
Sounds silly, but of the bike has been dropped, the shifter could be hitting the exhaust or the frame.
It's one of those problems sometimes solved by flopping down on the ground and watching things work.
