self driving cars - aftermarket mods

get it while it's easy
so motor heads being what they are and always have been - in the future age of self driving cars, what modifications do you predict? do we all just climb on board and get in line? or will someone somewhere do software upgrades to squirt in and around the rule followers? am thinking tightening the rules of proximity indicators will be the first victim. :laughing

FLCL?
It will be locked down as best as manufacturers be able to do. With secure boot sequence, and integrity checks.

yeah - no way that can be hacked. some things are stupid simple. the exhaust system on my car is clearly marked ‘off road use only’ in italian. no american emmisions inspection station has ever bothered to translate it lol.

Non-self driving enthusiast groups (auto terrorists) will hack the system with analog driving techniques that a battalion of self driving cars will not be able to react correctly to...and cause massive pile ups of these shit heaps.

Cosmetic mods only. After all, that's what most sheep prioritize anyway.

With enough resources sure, by average joe? Not so much.

The average joe simply buys the hacks from the hacker joes, that is how it works with other tech.

Like anything else tech related, as soon as there is enough interest, people start figuring out how to hack it. Remember how secure Apple products were and then it got to the point that within hours or days the systems where hacked?

As soon as there are enough self driving cars on the road someone will figure out the "pass" hack, package it and sell it. Slow self driving car ahead? No sweat, push your "pass" button and voila, that car moves over because someone figured out how to do it.

What do you think the market is for something like that? Billion$$$$$.

It doesn't matter if its illegal, so is breaching computer systems belonging to others yet it happens all the time.

Fucking weak ass bitches, trying to personalize their vehicles with no regard to improved performance. What a bunch of sheep amirite?
Can't believe people actually do things they want to their own property.

There's a BARFer with a pretty sweet Prius. Almost positive it has a/f wheels. Not rollin on dubs, but still...

You know, I have yet to see a Prius with big wheels or a Tesla with an extra battery pack stuffed in the trunk.

I sold this car a couple years ago. 18x7 wheels, bodykit, swaybars, and chassis braces. The size and weight of the wheels cost 3+ mpg. The swaybars allowed much higher corner speeds. Higher than most drivers are comfortable with.

As for hacking, Tesla's drivetrain software has been hacked and people re-purposing the systems into other vehicles. If they can hack the drivetrain, hacking the sensors can be assumed.

All that work and it's still a Prius :twofinger

Once the cars become self aware, they will just tell us what they want. Pretty sure it wont be spinners or donk wagon wheels. It will be interresting to see how often they wash themselves or beg for stickier tires.

:laughing

Edit - i bet the german cars will be really anal about things, american cars will probably want lift kits and dirt tires...

They are still secure. No idea what you are talking about.
You probably meant being able to root. Which is different from hacking. Guess what not a whole lot of people do it, and that's on a phone that is worth few hundred bucks and doesn't have a possibility to kill you if you get it wrong.

Original question was for modding self driving cars software. Market for that is not billions.
Now reverse engineering something to get competitive advantage that is another story, but that is not what original question was about.

All autonomous vehicles should have a mandatory R2-D2 like droid head popping out of the roof or hood.
I am going to start a ballot measure to make it law.

Performance mods on a self driving car are pretty pointless, no? Who cares how much horsepressure it has if the software won't let it go over 35 (or any other posted speed limit). I''m pretty sure a Tesla in self drive doesn't accelerate from light to light in ludicrous mode just because it can either.
