Security Camera DVR - Recomendations

Anyone have a recommendation for a security camera system? I'm looking for something with 4-6 cameras for under $500. Reviews all seem mixed, generally the software interface seems to sucks and I can live with that.

My concerns are with the quality of the video. I would like to be able to identify someone at ~50ft, is that possible? Seems like reading a licence plate is pretty much out of the question, reading reviews it seems like a lot of the systems wouldn't help you identify some one unless they're really close. This wouldn't work for mounting under the eave of a two story house.

I'd prefer a hardwired camera, cat 5 interface would be nice since it would be cheap and easy. Wireless isn't a priority since I'll need to run power regardless and I'm concerned about the reliability of it.

Any specific brands? None seem to standout in the reviews I've been reading.

Out of your price, requires an annual fee, offsite recording only, wireless

I love the new Nest products

I get notifications on my phone when it detects movement/noise inside. I don't have to worry about local content being stolen. They're small. Great image. Web Interface. Connect Easily.

Can you use these outdoors?
Do they record to a cloud based storage?
Do they have any sort of night vision?

The price doesn't seem too bad and it looks like you can add on. I mainly want to cover my driveway and the front door. I don't really need the alert system, but I do want to go back and review footage if needed.

I have 2 inside and 1 outside

I think I'm looking for a home security system with video add-on. Door/window sensors, motion detectors, etc. Quite a few have email or phone call if anything happens. I may get a cheap security camera + DVR system for checking things out after the fact.
Deciding how much to spend to keep my inexpensive shit safe is the deciding factor.

I have a four channel ZModo system I got off Amazon. I paid $120 for the DVR and cameras, and $80 for a 500 GB hard drive a few years ago. It was a bit tricky to setup, but once it was done it was pretty solid. The hard drive failed in it a few weeks ago, so I got a 1 TB.

Getting a couple MP4s ready for you.

I would recommend Zmodo, but I would recommend getting a larger capacity DVR than the number of cameras.
I bought a four channel DVR with four cameras. I wish I would have bought an 8 channel so I could have the option to buy a couple more cameras down the road.

I would recommend right and choosing save target as, save to your local hard drive before viewing.

Two MP4 files 7 MB

I had to zip them so they would download.

Lets try with AVI files.
This time a 10 MB file.

Just noticed my time was out of sync too.

Yes they are coax connectors on each end, but the actual cable to be run is very thin. Like cell phone charger thin. Of course with connectors on each end, you'll have to feed through a coax size hole, but it makes it so you can feed it through an open window or something pretty easily.

I use them on a couple apartment buildings. I don't know what kind I do 3-4 cameras and I use a static ip address so I can monitor them from my phone or computer. Its pretty cool when the lady in 201 says her kid didn't break the sprinkler and you can show her not only the kid doing it but him bringing his mom to see and the both of them running away!

My system works pretty good but then again it's very beefy. I have a Synology DS415+ with 24 TB of storage connected to 2 Hikvision 2CD2532F-IS-2.8MM, 2 Hikvision 2CD2532F-I-6MM and finally 2 DS-2CD6332FWD-IV. I get great coverage of the outside of my entire place and the surrounding area but I'm also into it for around $4,000. The DS415+ is a bit of overkill with the storage but I also use it for backups and streaming to my TV's.

I've seen some systems at Costco but you are really limited to only using their cameras with the IP based systems unless you get a general purpose system like me. I can use cameras from just about anybody.

I bought a close out from Home Depot, 8 cameras and a 500Gb hard drive, Lorex brand, open box, for $120. Here it is, a year and a half (roughly) later, and 3 cameras aren't working, actually, it seems that one of the power adaptors (2 of them, powering 4 cameras each) is going faulty, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, and one camera on the same power supply, blinks on and off every 3 seconds. If I switch cables around, I get the same result. Probably the power supply.

Can't read a license plate. Can't really see faces. But at night, the red infrared lights around the edge of the camera, are pretty obvious, and hopefully, any burglars or boogie men, will see them and go to the next house or the next block for easier pickings.

I'm a big fan of my system. It's 3 fake cameras that I bought for $40 and installed in 20 minutes. The cigarette butts near the driveway disappeared after they went up.
