Going to start a thread for questions as they pop up for a ride I'm planning for my annual "Search for Bigfoot" ride with pops.

First question that I"ve come across...

4 vs 108?

Twisties? Sites? Gas? Food?

Which one wins?

I just think it's so fucken cool that you do this with your dad.
Mine was a useless douchebag. I'm making up lost time by doing these things with my son. Threads like these warm my heart.

Both, 108 out, 4 back home.

Agree with this. HWY 4 is quite a bit different near the top. Lanes not marked, tends to be dirty, plenty of blind turns so outside in applies.

Fun as hell though.

108 is more big bike friendly and depending on whether Pops wants a bigger challenge you may consider going both ways on 108.

Grand Canyon? You takin the KLR650? These are pictures from the North Rim when I was on the way to the TAT. A KLR650 would be good here. The last part is a little gnarly/ledgy but should be fine I saw a minivan going down it haha. If you look on a Butler map of AZ there is a LONG dual sport road that goes to the Tuweep Grand Canyon area. It literally like almost 100 miles of dirt road to get here. I called it a dirt highway. I heard somewhere along the North Rim not too far from here is that kinda walkway that goes over the grand canyon and you can look down into it. Wanted to go there but didn't have time. Not sure but I think you could camp here if you had a permit also otherwise better hightail it outta there before it get's dark I don't think they let you camp near the Grand Canyon, I could be thinking of the North Rim National Park though.

Same, I did this route late Summer last year. Sea level it was 90 degrees, 8000ft it was about 40 degrees. 108 is more long sweepers where 4 is tight and technical. I personally had more fun on 4 due to small lakes you come across. In Stanislaus Forest, there IS NOTHING. So prepare your gas fill up wisely. Topaz lake area was a big let down, I actually ate at a gas station for lunch it was that sad.

Still torn on which to do...

108 sounds more connie friendly, but 4 sounds more fun for twisties...

Agreed, I'm trying to take advantage while I still can. He's even realizing he's getting older and not able to do this much so is thinking big for next year's ride... Bigfoot Euro edition or something more epic than the usual epicness that is the hunt.

If we had more time we would totally be doing KLR's but it's not the 2 week trip we wanted to do.

Route is Planned!

Leaving on Monday

I probably should pack some bags or something right?

Day 1: https://goo.gl/maps/RNKYD7auY4voyRGj6
Napa to Mammoth Lakes - 323 Miles
Chose Highway 4 over 108 based on amount of turns, and it put us out better for a side route of 338/181.

Looking for the dirtiest, most get shot-y saloons for the entire trip and found some goods ones for day 1 as well.

Because Bigfoot might be in there.

Vegas to Grand Canyon - 347 Miles

Valley of Fire sounds like a good place to be right? 107 predicted

In and out of Utah and then to the North Rim.

I saw south rim as a kid with my mom, dad has never seen either rim.

Staying in Jacob's Lake as the hotel in the park was fully booked.

Day 4: https://goo.gl/maps/ke8WZ4Hww7FAbd6p9

Grand Canyon to Ely NV - 330 Miles

Visiting Zion this day which is going to be very cool

Trying to figure out exactly where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed as it was in that area.

Big chunk of absolutely nothing until we get close to Ely so really planning on bringing deli lunches for this day.

I also noticed I had us routed on 30 miles of dirt road and had to adjust because neither of us felt confident about unknown dirt roads in the middle of a desert on Concours's...

Been scouring the rest of the routes double checking no dirt

Day 5: https://goo.gl/maps/EckuCbWC7Df9xmD4A

Ely to Virginia City - 320 Miles

A long long LONG time on 50 this day, another possible deli sandwich day though there looks to be some life in MiddleGate... maybe, can not confirm.

Also found a "saloon" that I'm taking my dad too that might also be a brothel... the pictures are sure suggestive.

Day 6: https://goo.gl/maps/nUA3y7th72Zr3ZhL7

Virginia City back to Napa - 288 miles

Our shortest day we both wanted to avoid 80... so 20 made sense to not overextend our day considering we'll be tired most likely.

We also wanted to stop at Cabelas.... for no reason what so ever....... :winkwink

Yuba City for Lunch and then through Lake County and home
