Need moar dirt
UPDATE...see Post #22 for all the gory details....

Hey all - I'm looking at a 06 te610 husky, carbed w some thoughtful mods. Will be used as a true dualsport - riding slab to get to the dirt n play!

What do I need to know/look out for? Any/all feedback appreciated...as if I has a choice:twofinger I'm 6ft, 230lbs, and taller bikes tend to fit me well.

I had a 610SM for a short while (~year). Fun bike, a little heavy. Much preferred my Hyper on the street and WR250F off.

Yeah, but keep in mind that Tami has the size to really throw the bike around, whereas Tim is just a little guy. :laughing

:laughing

So true! Might be a little much for you, Tim! I mean, it ain't no lightweight like your DL1000 was on the trails of Carnegie :teeth

What are the particulars on the bike you're looking at? Mileage? Mods? History?

Check your PM's.

No! No PM's. We all want to be in on this. I'm still waiting for my chevy to sell then it will be some kind of big bore super Moto for me

Oldest hooligan you know
They need cam chains about every 10k miles...that's about it other than regular prudent maintenance...

Not exactly. Some of them had issues with premature wear when new. It's a known issue, but it is totally random. Mine had to be replaced at about 4k but my buddy Jon replaced his at 19k. He has over 40k on it now. My cam chain tensioner has hardly moved in the ensuing +18k miles. The OEM parts to replace it were less than $100, they were on my porch the day after I ordered them (thanks, MotoXotica!) and it took less than 2 hours to replace in my back yard. Not a big deal.

I have over 22k on my 610 and the only issue I've had other than the cam chain was a faulty part in my ignition switch. One of the contacts in the switch was farther away than the other contact, it was made funky by whoever made the part, and it eventually failed. A new switch solved the issue. No other trouble with it. Regular maintenance includes a valve check every 2k miles when the oil gets changed. Yeah, it could go longer but I plan on having this bike for a very long time so it makes sense for me to be conservative. They are lash adjusters and tend to move a little more than shim and bucket valves.

Oh yeah, you'll also hear folks say the clutch cable is going to break as soon as you roll it off the showroom floor. Barnett sold a ton of clutch cables in `06 and `07, I'm sure. Well, a lot of them did break, I'm guessing due to crappy routing. My stock cable lasted 16k miles. When it broke in the middle of nowhere Utah I whipped my spare stock cable out of my doggy bags and we were on our way within the hour. No issues with the 2nd one in the +6k miles since then, so I'm guessing I'll probably get 16k out of this one, too. Not bad.

They are fucking badass and you should buy it.

That's all you need to know.

I've owned two of them, love them.
Thanks!...from all I've been reading they do seem to be bad-ass, and endear a lot of owner loyalty :thumbup

WoodsChick's ride reports should be enough to close the deal for you.
No shit...:twofinger her RRs have been highly motivating for me...both re the Husky 610 and the places she and Eric ride...I was able to ride in the desert for the first time recently :thumbup :thumbup, tho still haven't found any of those awesome secret hot springs...:p

...yeah, I understand I could go lighter for the dirt, but being the heavyweight that I am, I really want something that will do okay on the slab getting me to the dirt...that's where my patient runs thin :teeth The other thing is I'm coming from riding a beasty 525lb vstrom in the dirt, so I think the 610 will feel absolutely light-weight to me! But definitely not ruling out a light 250 in the future for dirt-only.

Yeah, but keep in mind that Tami has the size to really throw the bike around, whereas Tim is just a little guy. :laughing
Yeah good point...wait, wut? :wtf:teeth:rofl

:teeth I still get a huge grin on my face whenever I think of that awesome day at Carnegie :thumbup Great turn out with lots of barfers, awesome riding, and the shit I made my vstrom do and lived to tell the tale :twofinger

Bike is a 2006 te610. 10K miles, senior-owned, regularly maintaned w/ Maxima synthetic oil; mods incld IMS 5 gal gastank, Seat Concepts seat, Leo Vance pipe, case savers, chain guide, skid plate. 3500 on chain/sprockets, front tire new, rear has about ~600miles left. Owner is selling b/c he's getting older and not riding as much.

Any suggestions what would be a fair price for such a bike? Not many 610s for sale, and hard to figure pricing with all diff setups/conditions.

:teeth No promises A&D - certainly happy to share all the details AFTER I FIND and BUY a bike...:twofinger....but I will tell you I'm starting to drink the coolaid on the 610!

I just finished reading +50 pages of BigDogAdventures te610 escapades over on ADV - wow - bike was ridden all over Mexico, TAT, Idaho, Colorado, etc, then the next owner did south America on the same bike:thumbup

I rode a new KLR at the show yesterday - was fun to check it out, felt light, nimbleish, and solid power to get me up to 80 on the freeway, albeit slowly but it was there. But I did note the vibration :| - I'm not naive and fully expect thumpers to vibrate on the freeway, but I do understand now other posts about KLRs vibrating your butt and arms to sleep after a couple of hours on the freeway...looking forward to trying the 610 and see how it compares :thumbup...my twin-v really spoiled me - even riding parallel twins I notice more vibes/buzzing than I ever felt with the vee.

Man if the KLR felt nimble imagine what the husky will feel like?! Its interesting everyone knocks the KLR for vibration. I dunno if mine is special or if I am just used to it but I have pulled a couple 1000 mile weekends on the thing and the only problem I had was a sore backside by the end of it.

I am excited to hear what you think if/when you end up riding it. I actually had an itch for an SM610 but more as a replacement for the DRZ instead of the KLR. I'm hoping things work out! :thumbup

Useful idiot
Tim, I think you would LOVE a 610. Worst case, you could always ride it for awhile and sell it to me. :teeth

WoodsChick

I Don't Do GPS
I've ridden two 610's and liked neither of them.

Something must be wrong with me?

Pfft...obviously you were doing it wrong :x

:laughing

Hey, just because I think the 610 is the greatest true dual sport platform in the universe doesn't mean everyone else will. They're heavy for a dirt bike and limited for a street bike. For my particular uses, though, which is all the delicious gray area in between, there's no other bike out there that I'd rather be on. Different strokes for different folks. That's one of the fun things about this sport...finding the perfect machine and making it your own:party
