Saturday - 2/18/2012 - Big Sur - Coastal Road Ride Out

metrorollah

OWHLY?
This ride will explore coastal hard-pack public roads on the Big Sur coast, culminating in some proper Big Sur restaurant action.

The ride will be down route 1 then cutting off into the camp roads that garnish the coast. I have ridden half of the roads we will be exploring, and I would not be afraid to take a street bike with street tires on them. Last time the dirt was as hard as an office carpet. The biggest challenge will be corduroys in the uphill parts, but if you can maintain while standing on your pegs and shaking, you can deal with those. The rest is hard pack double-track, so plenty of room to froth around on your Diablo Rossa Doucha Corsoduros... fruitcake!

Rain cancels the event due to nature of the roads.

So far ride has 6 people going from Facebook event. Meet point will be the Chit-Chat cafe on Manor Drive in Pacifica at 9:00-9:30 for coffee and coffee cake. Kickstands up at 9:30.

http://www.bigsurcamp.com has agreed to have us as a walk-in. They still have an opening in a two bedroom cabin with a kitchen and living room, and also plenty of tent camping sites. I coerced her into lifting her two night minimum for Saturday so we can just roll in on Saturday all dirty and fucked up and get a place for the night. The cabins are pretty pricey, $450, but if enough people come it will be similar to the price of a hotel. If not, we can rough it for sure.

Group 1 - (people returning home) can turn around at Bixby Bridge when we hit our first dirt leg.
Group 2 - (people staying but only riding street) can continue down RT1 and meet the dirt group at Big Sur Camp.
Group 3 - (people with genitalia) will hit up Old Coast, pictured, and then the camp, and second dirt leg, Coast Ridge Road which is a dead end

Nice. I can't make that weekend but if nothing else, will hang onto your route and do it at a later time.

Where will you go after the end of Lost Valley Creek, and what's a good lunch stop?

UPDATE: I think at least two of us are camping down there. Probably primitive.

I'll be packing a tent and sleeping bag... by primitive I assume you mean whiskey, burning things, and perhaps face painting apocalypse now style.

PS- the forecast is a lot better than it was.

What kind of gas range would we need?

We've got folks on sportbikes coming. I think we can work it out if you can do around 100 miles. Maybe a little less.

I'll bring a couple msr bottles and a siphon too. I get 220 on the f800 so I will have a bit to spare.

boy, that's a question worth asking!!! I think I have the answers:

110 miles round trip from Carmel to the furthest out woods spot we'll be going.

you will not be the only chap on an f800, and my Versys gets 180 or so. I will have a siphon, tire pump, and patch kit as well.

Sweet ... I'm thinking about strapin the tent and bag on the back and meeting up at 4 corners , that would be 9 and skyline ? some folks call
STP 4 corners.

There is gas in the park. You don't have to go all the way back to Carmel.

Who else has an F800 (this is Dan btw)?

Sup folks! I'll be helping, hosting the Santa Cruz leg of the ride. It should be an hour's worth of backroads as we'll be zig zagging the hills.

The 4 corners that we're meeting at is the parking lot at the intersection of 9 & 35. Aka Sarratoga gap, aka the other 4 corners lol.

Anyway, i'll be up there by 10 and we'll do a head count, maybe a quick break for the folks coming in from the north.

Kick stands up hopefully by 10:30.
