Roku 3 vs Fire TV or ?

Silence

Has bad taste
We don't have cable TV and have Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions.

Currently only have a Chromecast so Amazon Prime content is completely wasted.

We don't watch live sports.

We're also not in the Apple ecosystem and have Android phones and tablets.

What can I get that would make the missus happy? :laughing

None of the above.

Shield TV.

Android TV will change everything...

All the major streaming providers 'cept Amazon prime, but that is expected. Built in casting. App installs, game streaming, voice search for everything.

Don't get suckered into Roku's 100,000 'free' channel talk. Most of it is just garbage and small clips off YT.

We like our Apple TV. If you have an iPhone or Mac you can play vids or music (or pr0n) from there to your TV via AirPlay.

I have both one of the original Roku's and a Prime Fire Stick.

I like the Fire Stick better, but I still use the Roku on the garage TV. Both work great.

Of the two, Fire TV. Only because of the Apps - download Kodi and be able to watch ALL TV shows and ALL movies, whenever! Same applies to the Android TV, but I've never used it.

See this thread.

Anything that runs Kodi will be good. I installed it (with OSMC) on a Raspberry Pi 2 as well as on a computer in my living room.

If you have more than 1 tv, try different ones on different tvs. They all have issues. Fire stick has a nice phone app, buuuut...you still have to use the stupid little remote first if its asleep, which if course it always is.

Because of this thread, now I have to try shield and kodi

I put Roko 3 on one of our rental property TVs. All it is good for is NetFlix as far as I am concerned.
But I feel the same way with a smart TV we have elsewhere. Web browsing sucks without a keyboard so it is only good for Netflix.
For any internet stuff I want to watch (motogp.com) I just play it on my laptop and HDMI it to the TV.

Love my Roku 3 even though we have cable.

Tons of interesting Documentary content out there not ON DEMAND and a great way to watch ESPN3 in HD in the living room; wife has Amazon Prime and Netlix.

Every once in a while it'll get glitch but that's likely more the connection than the Roku itself.

I thought it was stupid to get initially have since changed my tune.

If you don't have cable you can always "borrow" a friend's cable access password for things like Watch ESPN. :shhh

If you have an android device, you can cast your screen (mirror) to Android TV, and start Amazon prime video that way.

If you're on iOS, then good luck.

Is casting good enough these days that you can cast video content on another site? I remember it being choppy when I tried it a while back.
