I did an overnighter to Fort Bragg the other day, taking 101 to 128, then up to Leggett, then back down to Fort Bragg for the night. In the AM I took Hwy One all the way to Stinson Beach then up the Panoramic etc to The City.
Anderson Valley road is getting pretty beat up since the last major repave (ten years ago?), even though along the river they're doing some paving.
Hwy One from the Navarro River up to Leggett is nice, with a few rough spots.
And....All those juicy curves between FortBragg and Leggett are still there waiting for you...Yum.
On the way home, I found that One is generally pretty good, until you get past Stewart's Point and Fort Ross. Unfortunately all those luscious corners on the cliffs North of Jenner are paved with potholes, ruts, gravel and of course all the Summer nimbots in their Winnebagos were there wallowing along the bluffs.
I did see a fair amount of road work underway, here and there, although no major paving projects seem to be going on on Hwy One. It would be nice if they'd regrade and lay down some fresh asphalt between Jenner and Fort Ross. That's a main event road, and deserves to be treated with special attention.
In Elk, Queenie's Roadhouse is still serving those exquisite cheeseburgers, and always puts me in the best frame of mind for hunting Winnebagos.
Else: The R1200R is the ideal ride for an all-day corner-fest. It's got enough heft to soak up the lumps but nimble enough to allow for some flippety-flopping through the corners on a long twisty highway.
