RIP Stirling Moss

Mama says he's bona fide
One of the greatest racing drivers ever, at age 90. From the obituary at Top Gear: "His wife, Lady Susie Moss, told the Daily Mail in the early hours of Easter Morning, 'He died as he lived, looking wonderful. He simply tired in the end and he just closed his beautiful eyes and that was that'." Read the whole thing. It's a great look back at his life.

In 1955, journalist Denis Jenkinson rode with Moss as navigator in the Mille Miglia, a 1000-mile race through Italy on public roads, which they won in a Mercedes 300SLR. He wrote about it in the magazine Motor Sport: With Moss in the Mille Miglia. It's a long article with pics and a video narrated by Moss. Jenkinson also got a book out of the experience, The Racing Driver: The Theory and Practice of Fast Driving, a classic, and still in print and available from Amazon.

I watched him race at Nurburgring in the early sixties. A fantastic driver and man. Back in the day you could walk freely in the paddock and go up to the drivers and ask for autographs.

He raced back when bravery was a key ingredient, along with talent to be a champion.

One of the greatest. To have survived racing in the 50’s and 60’s is a feat in an of itself.

I saw him once at Laguna but did not get to shake his hand...

Time marches on.

He nearly died from his injuries at Goodwood in ‘62. Had he not been so injured he would likely have been a GP Champion. He retired at just 33.

RIP to one of the truly great drivers.

In the 80s he was often at the Pebble Beach Concours, I quietly followed him and Sir Jackie Stewart. It was cool being near that much greatness.

I read his autobiography "All But My Life" in the early 70's. I remember liking the book and that he was a fascinating guy.

Recedite, plebes!
Sad news.
Had this one and a lot of extra track. Best friend also had a set. We would make a four lane, 30'+ drag strip down the center of the hallway and run the cars into a pillow. My XKE with the softer tires was the quickest. :teeth
