RIP Phil Spector

DataDan

Mama says he's bona fide
Yes, in the end he was a dirtbag. But he made rock'n'roll what it is.

The "wall of sound"...

...was everywhere.

Who knew he produced this?

Bruce Springsteen, via the Rolling Stone article linked above: "Phil’s records felt like near chaos, violence covered in sugar and candy … little three–minute orgasms, followed by oblivion. And Phil’s greatest lesson was sound. Sound is its own language."

I dare you to listen to "Born to Run" and not recognize Spector's influence.

According to Google Spector had 19 top 10 hits, 5 of which went to #1 and was a millionaire by his mid-twenties. His wall of sound technique changed everything in music at the time. And he collaborated with so many artists on many other songs over the years that became hits as well. Quite a creative force for sure . Unfortunately it was overshadowed by the murder he committed.

... and I got crap for an RIP for Marykay LeTourneau? :laughing

This guy was an abusive prick, shot somebody, let them die, looked damn silly with his fake hair, and humorously pathetic without it. :hand

Pass on the RIP...

Well sure--Bruce Springsteen and the Ramones. But Ronnie Spector and the Ronettes? What's not to love about them? :laughing

None of them were any good after 1984-5.... :laughing

(Mind you, I'm a huge Bruce fan of his work from '75 to '82, even saw him in Oakland in 1980 on "The River" tour... Born in the USA is tolerable, but not a "go to" for me. Too pop.

But, this is about Spector, who basically was a drug addled human stain. :thumbup )

Amen to all the above. I have every one of Springsteen's older albums and none of his newer ones.

They suck. Not sure where he picked up that "Okie" mumble....

RIP to Clarence and Danny Federici, though.

EDIT: my ticket stub to the Springsteen show in Oakland.

Yup.

My remembered show is Bill Hailey and the Comets playing live at our teen club in 1961, lol.
