RIP little Monster (It lives!!!)

She was red, loud and a little slow, but she's been mine for 10 years now. My beloved Ducati Monster's engine took that long, last final ride into the sky. :angel It had just shy of 93,000 miles on it. I had just had the oil changed--pretty sure that's what did it. :laughing

So now the question is to rebuild or buy new. Think I'm gonna rebuild. I really like that bike and I've been thinking about it all night. This is one of those motorcycles where if I get rid of it, I'm going to regret it.

I rode my bicycle into work this morning--I need to get a moto quick, before I get in shape or something. If anyone's gotta carb'd 900cc motor lying around (or a 944 big bore kit), or a scooter they want thrashed for a few weeks, lemme know.

Augustiron might be able to help. The threatened to trade me a ducati motor for some spare parts I have... I don't own any ducatis worth putting a motor in

Oh also. Definitely rebuild. New bikes, monsters in particular compared to their predecessors, have no soul

93,000 miles is amazing, maybe Ducati should kick something down for the positive PR! :laughing

Darned straight. It lasted so long because I ride like a girl. (I also had the top end freshened up at 38K, so it's not all original miles...)

Didn't Rick's make it to about the same amount of miles before it grenaded? :dunno

I think his went a bit longer and on the original motor. Not sure about that though... I'm sure he'll chime in at some point and give me a rash of (well deserved) crap.

What let go? If it's the top end the rebuild can be a relatively straight forward project.

If you really need to borrow a scooter, I have a completely clapped out honda metro you can borrow for a few weeks. But it is thrashed: blown fork seals, no turn signals, bald tires, brakes barely work and super ugly. With that said, I ride it all the time and it goes fine.

While I won't publicly admit to the ridiculously low amount he quoted me, Mike at Nichols can source you a re-manufactured 903 for a really good price.

One of the cylinders has got some serious compression loss. Not sure what else is going on. At this point, I could just "get it fixed" but the shop is saying that it's probably not a good idea to only repair the broken stuff if we're digging into the engine. Everything else has got 100K on it too, and it's just a matter of time. I knew this was coming and was waiting for a reason to crack the case basically.

:rip Monsta' Duc.
Thanks, man. :)

I need to get into SF from Oakland a few times a week, so your offer probably isn't the best idea. If I were just knocking around Oakland it would probably work. I don't like getting stranded on the bridge--been there, done that. Thanks though!

Definitely rebuild it. It's so close to 100k, it deserves to reach it. Take the RIP out of the title, yo!

Bronze the old Monster and mount it above the fire place, its served out its useful life, let it die with dignity.

Then buy this, your new favorite bike:

DH, I have a 919 that has been sitting since my wreck. I've been looking for an excuse to flush the tank, slap in this new battery, and reinsure it. I can have it ready for you to borrow in a week, if you like. It's soulless compared to your Duc but would get you there.

Rebuilding the engine, ESP as part of a Moto Shop class, sounds fun to me.
