Rides up in Northern California (CA-299 and CA-36)

There was snow in weaverville (quite a bit actually) so while it might not be falling, all those roads are going to be a little dicey. 299 sees the most traffic and will likewise be cleaner (road construction delays of up to 30 minutes), but there's more traffic. You can get hwy3 in weaverville and head either way.
If it were me, I'd stay in weaverville (cheap lodging) and head out from there.

I highly recommend heading through the Hoopa Reservation. The roads are amazing and the scenery is staggering. I passed through on my IBA ride with 2 friends and my only regret is we couldn't stay to enjoy it.

Man, this thread is bringing back some memories of some really good rides up there.

Taking 96 off of 299 to Yreka unreal, then 3 back down. We did a logging road off of 299 south to 36 once.....not a soul or car was seen.

The nice whooping section of 36 west of Red Bluff.

Yep, return trip is top of my list for this year.

Forks of Salmon. /close thread
Exactly.
Bay area to hwy 1 to garberville.
Then through the redwood forest back on 101 to 36 to 3 over Scoot Mtn. and stay in Etna.

N fork of the Salmon to the Forks get gas and

take the South Fork back to Etna ( then 3 to weavervile and all the way to Red Bluff and work back to Bay Area or take 36 all the way back to 101.

or keep going through Hoopanto Eureka and down 1 and various coastal mountain connecting roads.

It has been wet , windy and cool.
Haven't hit 36 in two months :cry
Forks of the Salmon would be a real crap shoot during the winter months between snow , slides etc. This is best done in the Fall after the temps cool just a bit. Super goaty in places but epic :thumbup
We have had slides close 299 (sometimes both lanes) off and on for a few weeks.
It will be mossy and and damp this year on the back side of South Fork Mtn to Forest Glen even if the sun has come out so thats a good stretch to chill and enjoy the scenery.
If we ever get a day with out rain on the weekends I will have more to report :ride
