Ride Apart - Cracker Jack Journalism

When I read a trash article I usually don't bother to call it out, but I scratched the surface on this one and just had to laugh. Ride Apart published an article titled DOT Helmet Failure Rate Increases To 43 Percent. A pretty concerning title isn't it? The article ends with this final warning paragraph.

In 2019, Act Labs tested brands such as Bell, Scorpion, Shoei, and HJC and you can look up specific makes, models, and year of testing at the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance website. While the manufacturers listed above are reputable companies, overall findings suggest that consumers may want to seek out helmets with additional safety certifications. If there’s one thing this data demystifies for consumers, it’s that manufacturers adhere to DOT standards on a consistently inconsistent basis.

Except none of the brands listed by the author were one of the brands that failed the test. Looking at test results you see that all of the helmets that failed the performance test except for one model from ILM were all Crazy Al helmets. Which honestly, I had never heard of but a quick Google search revealed they are cruiser brain buckets. In this case that is pretty literal.

Example:

The AL995, failed all impact tests and the high temperature penetration test. See pic from one of the failed pentration test. Can you say, "I have a hole in my head!"

Cracker Jack is one term. I'd call much of it "insipid."

I yearn for the journalism of Cycle Magazine and it's equal anywhere. Anywhere here??? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?
