Just about everywhere reputable has turned into insurance only. Anyone have any good leads on shops that will do work on old rust repair restoration projects? Got a 70 Plymouth and a 50 Ford that I might get work done on if I can find someone....

Pretty hard to find a shop that does out of pocket work and is reliable. I have two shops in mind up here in Santa Rosa. Scott at chucklesgarage does lots of custom work, he posts mostly on Facebook or instagram if you want to check it out. He's fairly busy, I've stopped by a couple times to check out his compound turbo Ford F-1 and it's pretty sweet.

The second shop I have not had any dealings with but have seen some nice 1st gen 'cuda's and camaro's there. He's just starting back up after the fires took his shop so not sure how ready he is to work. Johnsautobodysantarosa.com

I've had stuff done at Gambino Kustoms and I was happy with them.

They do nice work.

Not cheap.

I just had out of pocket body and paint done on my old Avalanche and it was a bit difficult finding someone to do it. And I couldn't even get a quote for a full paint job. Nobody wanted to touch that. One guy told me that nobody does full paint jobs anymore. Too expensive and too much of a PITA.

Look out of state. Even with shipping round trip, the savings on labor might make up for it.

OP, what do you need done?

The 70 needs rust repair in all the common spots that B bodies rust. The 50 I have dreams of leaving at Gambinos for a full chopped custom, but I'd be happy with someone doing just the chop and windows at this point. I'm almost tempted to do the patch panels myself, but not if I can't get it finished after.

So Gambino's hosts a metal working course every winter-I think sometime in December and Gene Winfield turns up and teaches. It's for a weekend, and during it, they chop a car-it's probably the cheapest way to get yours done.

If you can get him to pick your car. It's worth a shot.

Good luck.

OP, I also have a 50 Ford. And a few Mopars. My Ford is a Tudor. Hoped for a club coupe but this Tudor caught my eye. All original. Rusty. Just rebuilt the cooling system. Gonna lower it once I get my 74 Barracuda running.

Mine is original seafoam green, but with more rust, and running gear from a 90s mustang. That's the one I want to do up, just sort of stumbled into the Plymouth.

How much you want? I'd trust a long time barfer before pretty much any shop. Time is irrelevant to me.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'm not in the business-just a hack.

I'm also on the east coast now, so....logistically no good.

Honestly, it's cheaper to buy one that's already done.
