Responsibilities when riding with a passenger

But Ronny what if she was uber hot? Look, no chick gets on the back with out a little lecture, the right gear and me slowing down and riding much more conservatively. Two up riding usually sucks anyways, most girls aren't very good at it. Though it is pretty awesome second date move.

you need lessons on 2 up riding. It is a hoot with the right passenger. :)

Your probably right! around a month ago i took a girl i know out on the back. She is 100lbs soaking wet and knew how to be a great passenger. You didn't even notice she was there.

As for carrying a passenger, you will need time to refine your .... their useful contributions to this thread and giving it a boost. ... I don't want to rain on your parade, but riding a motorcycle is a much bigger responsibility (to ... nicely seperates them so I can see what I said and his reply. ...

I may be dense, mm22176, but I can't tell if you're asking a question or making a statement. I don't understand what you're saying.

I like riding with a passenger when there are no other riders. I don't really prefer to have a passenger when heading out to do some twisties or other large group rides.

I ride much more cautiously with a passenger allowing for more reaction time and so on. Lane splitting with a passenger sucks so I try to avoid traffic.

Anyways who two ups on their track days? lol this is a picture of a girl I know riding passenger at the track.

I've never been to the track yet but hope I can ride as good as that by myself lol.

I would look further out, leave more of a cushion. Account for different balance and braking. I won't slow down any further, or I get ticketed for impeding traffic flow.

If you would look further out when riding with a passenger, why wouldn't you do this when riding alone?

Whenever I'm riding I'm trying to take in as much visual info as possible. So when I have a passenger, to account for the extra weight and handling differences, I ride slower.

I ride with my wife, who's small, light, experienced, has health insurance and a full aerostich suit. I can lean and change BP with her on the bike. Her instruction is to not move her butt, but to match my upper body lean angles. Hands around me resting or pushing on the tank. Thighs squeezing me ;) We can do the Doc Wong ride in one of the faster groups this way, going down Tunitas creek on a VFR without too much effort.

Damn the older Yamahas look way better than the ugly 2009 R1.

I agree with what most have said in this thread regrading safety. Personally I rather ENJOY taking passengers!

1) I always start by giving the person a lecture on the risk and safety involved.

2) Then I hand then all my spare gear, helmet, jacket, gloves, shin/knee protectors and I make sure they know to wear at the very least a pair of good jeans and good high boots to protect the ankles.

3) I then demonstrate riding techniques while the engine is off, so I can show them handling differences their weight can make. I further remind them NOT to shift their body weight and to keep their feet on the pegs at ALL times unless they are dismounting from the bike. This includes mounting after I give them the ok, and dismounting after I give them the ok. Another reminder is to ALWAYS follow my upper body position at ALL times and NEVER lean in the opposite direction of me; especially while in a turn or else theres a chance I won't make the turn and we could crash. Hopefully enough of this sort of talk and reminders and having a little quiz before we take off helps to get their mind ready for fun, but not forgetting the dangers involved should they do something wrong while on the back. Sometimes while on a straight rode I will purposefully have them shift their weight slightly so that they can really see just how much their lean can change my steering input.

4) I have never thought about asking if they have health insurance, it never came up, but in hindsight, all those I did have as passengers DID have it and if they did not, I probably would have thought twice before taking them.

5) Techniques I change.... I brake much earlier and softer so I do not get passenger slap hehe or crushing my manhood on the gas tank! FAIL! I also attempt to accelerate slower so as not to have them feel they will fall off, additionally I explain that I will REV the engine prior to acceleration so that they have a queue to be ready. I found that riding 2up actually improved my riding and helped me become better at turning and many other things simply because i was unable to get my body off of the seat. I tend to lane split passenger or not, however its just a matter of doing it at a slower speed but this creates a problem with sudden steering input sometimes needed when lane splitting.

Oh yes and I have a speed hump on my jacket... EVERY passenger HATES it lol because they CONSTANTLY hit it and have trouble moving their head around it, however I have NEVER had a single helmet kiss! Sometimes I think wearing the jacket without it, would be better... but I dont because I always wear my 2-piece and refuse to swap safety for the comfort of the passenger.

Don't be that guy.
just a little bump.

I finally feel comfortable enough with taking my gf on rides with me. We just got her all the full gear (sidi came out with new boots for women for $300 and they look so badass, we got these for her!). The info in this thread is extremely helpful. One question I had is about chain slack. Should I be loosening the chain slack to compensate for the increased weight? Right now the chain slack is the standard .8"-1.2".

You may want to get advice from a Lawyer prior to giving people rides on the back of your bikes. The liability you could be taking is huge. It may even be possible to have a release of liability form made for taking chicks for rides. Check with your insurance company for applicable coverage in passenger instances.

"yeah baby...just in case sign this...o this...this just says i can keep my gixxer in the event you fall off...litigious society we live in u :Bap:Bap:Bapknow"

:rofl
