Repair shops in and around Oakland

Hi everyone, first time poster here. Nice to meet you all, I wish it could be under happier circumstances. I hope I'm posting this in the right place!

Someone just backed into my bike in the parking garage under my apartment and really did a number on it. As an aside, I literally just moved in on Tuesday so I'm pretty flabbergasted something has happened already. I've made an insurance claim and everything, so I'm just waiting to hear back on that.

I'll probably be able to choose any local shop to take the bike to, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions. I know this is a noob question, but I'm new to the area and really have no experience with repairs short of maintenance items. I've been looking on Google and Yelp as well, so I promise I'm not just being a lazy millennial here.

Thanks for the advice, stay safe out there!

Berkeley Honda Yamaha isn't too far from you and they have a good service dept.

Thank you, when I was searching I noticed they have good reviews. I was hoping someone here would mention them because they were definitely on my short list

What kind of insurance did you have on a 1992 Honda Nighthawk 750 that the insurance company is going to payout ?

When I was getting insurance, Progressive basically offered me two options. I went for the option with a higher limit for medical expenses and pretty much just took whatever else came with it. :dunno

Plug for Meteor Motorbikes in Oakland if you'd like an independent shop.

Ah thanks, that's actually the other one I picked out! Glad my top two were both independently verified here.

I've always gone to an independent shop. I figured that since my bike is older, there's not really any particular reason to go to a Honda specific shop. Will a brand specific shop tend to be more expensive than an independent shop? Are there any huge benefits to going to one or the other?

For an insurance quote, I'd hit up your local dealer. Any real damage is going to total the bike. Have them cut you a check, buy the bike back for $250 (or whstever the junk value is) and fix it. It's a little bit of a pain to get the new title, but you could come out ahead in the end if the bike isn't too bad off.

+1 on Meteor, although I'm not sure he works on older bikes.

I can also wholeheartedly recommend Hayasa in Oakland. I've had only great experiences with Tyler. He only works on older Japanese bikes, as I understand it.

Thanks for all the advice! Meteor was a no go because the bike is elderly, but Berkeley Honda told me they'd take a look at it and give me a quote.

The person who knocked the bike over offered to settle without involving insurance, so depending on Berk's offer she'll either decide to do that or I'll just end up going through insurance. If I go through insurance, it'll probably be written off as a total loss but I'll just buy it back and fix it myself at Moto Guild.

Thanks again!
