Howdy!

Looking to re paint my race fairings and need some help.
Recommend me a shop or if you have experience repainting and would like to take on this project lmk. Not looking for anything fancy, perhaps flat black or pearl white

Thanks!

It really doesn't take long to sand. And you don't need to remove all the previous paint if it was automotive paint, not rattle can. Just smooth it out. Sharkskinz are the best, or almost best, and refinish very nicely

Whatever that means
The more effort you put into the finish of your track bike the more painful it will be if you bin it.

Rubbish finish is good luck

Would I need a orbital sander or just by hand. Start with 180 then finish with 400 to smooth out?

It's been awhile since I did this and I remember it very meditating. Perhaps I'll just DIY and not be lazy.

I’ve been trying for the better part of this year to hire someone to do a track bike paint/wrap job, and I’ve found it’s like pulling teeth. So hard to find someone who’s both local and will respond to messages reliably. Finally this weekend I resolved to just do it myself. Haven’t started yet but looking forward to failing and learning.

Plasti dip it and you don't even have to really prep and it peels off if you wanna change colors

I've been pretty busy lately, but if you are not too far from Santa Rosa, I can put whatever vinyl wrap on your fairings. You just have drop them off. PM me if you are interested.

a corded orbital sander is ~$60 and definitely worth the time savings. degrease everything. sand the imperfections til smooth. lightly sand or scuff the rest. degrease again. primer and paint it.

Thanks! just picked up a basic orbital sander from Amazon $35 and started attending Youtube university lol. I'll give this a go this weekend and see how it turns out.

Good. That's the way to do it. Don't start out too rough. It's so easy to put in deep scratches. Start out with a 200 or finer and see what happens. Do the bottom of the belly pan first, nobody sees it anyway.

Orbital is the way to go. Depending on the fairings, a piece of wood or actual sanding block may be needed for some contours.

You're well on your way. Orbital and rattle can saved a ton of money. My only thought here is to not skimp out on the rattle clearcoat. Get a few cans of 2-part Spraymax 2k high gloss and use a spray can gun holder.

i have gas
Step 1 . Drink beer
Wash with regular Dawn Dish washing soap to remove most of the oil and grime. Inside and out. Dry .

Depending on how many layers of paint and your desired finish.
For a rattle can quickie .

Step 2. Drink Beer
180,240 or 320 Grit DA paper use velcro backed papers if your sander has a velcro backing pad. Stickit paper works too.
Wear a dust mask.
Step 3 . Eat and drink beer
After sanding and before priming wash with Dawn or use a surface
cleaner / degreaser. Use multiple rags one to wipe more to dry as not to streak the surface.
Step 4.Burp and fart
Prime multiple coats . Depending on product and outside temps 15 to 20 minutes between coats ( same with color coats ). 3 good coats for coverage.
Step 5 Drink Beer
Sand with 400 to 600 wet or dry . By hand with a soft block or with your new toy.
If you burn through the primer, use a lite coat over those areas let dry then sand.
step 6. Stack empty cans
Before painting.
Wipe surface with degreaser , again one wet rag and more to dry.
If you're going to use a base /clear system. Again 15 to 20 minutes between coats (on the base coat). You can sand between coats if you want to, but why . Track parts.
If you're going to use a clear coat wait 45 minutes to 1 hour after the last base coat pass . Then clear.
Set 7.
Drink more beer and let dry.

Side note ....
Most autobody paint supply shops can pump base coats into rattle cans.
As posted above . Sprymax 2 part clear is really good .
WEAR a Respirator .

When sanding body parts that have no straight section, most motorcycle plastic pieces.
I have used sand paper wrapped around styrofoam As a soft sanding block, works very well.
