Recycling old tires

I've got a stack of worn out, busted tires, and I was wondering if there's a cheap place to take them for recycling...

I know you can take them to a dump -- but it looks like they charge $5 per tire. Doesn't seem right, considering motorcycle tires are smaller.

Will a motorcycle shop take them? They usually charge $2.50 for CA recycle fee.

If anybody wants to grab a tire and a somewhat bent rim to practice mounting/dismounting rubber give me a PM too.

we charge 2.50$ a tire at the tire shop i work at.. no way of getting around that, i think its a federal law that mandates the 2.50$ for tire disposal, not recycling.

Oakland has a service where they come out once a year to pick up "bulky waste" and that includes tires. Once a year I put a stack of 20 shagged out, burned out, fuckt up old tires out at 6 PM. By 8 AM some value hound has taken ALL of them, and I am talking junk tires.
