To get money early from those who recently renewed their unReal IDs.

I love the ending "brought to you by" statement.

Rolls with it...
Don't those passport ID cards do the same thing?

If you have one, then just wait til your license is up for renewal.

this is brought to you by the Dept of Homeland Security, who states:

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. States have made considerable progress in meeting this key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission and every state has a more secure driver’s license today than before the passage of the Act.

---

so...why doesn't CA meeting the minimum security standards for our licenses?

Or why has it taken them 13 years since the bill was passed to change anything? :wtf

Don't know why, CA DLs are pretty complex. My aunt just renewed her's in Colorado and one of the photos on it is see-through, but only when you hold it up to the light. Its weird.

It is not clear, but I see implications that the Real ID would not be sufficient as a driver's license. So the plan so far is to have us (Californians at least) purchase and maintain at least two forms of ID if traveling by air and driving in CA.

because illegals can't apply for REAL IDs?

I find this plausible, and I have contacted my assemblymember about it.

If this is the truth, has the fact that illegals' ability to obtain CA driver's licenses now made ALL of our licenses not in compliance with these CFRs? Thereby forcing us citizens to purchase more identification?

yeah so

nobody has to do anything for any reason for this yeah????

All you need is.. (if you go to Camada or Nexico) a passport? !!!--> which you probably has if you go to Camada already.

I'm not sure where you are coming from. Are you saying we should all have passports anyways?

only good if traveling to Canada or Mexico. waste of money those things are

... and apparently for getting on any US flight after whatever the enforcement date is til you renew your CDL to get a new one, correct?

I just renewed my license last year, and it's good til 2022. I got that passport card the last time I renewed it, and it's good til 2024.

I believe I'm covered for airline BS/Federal entry on to sites (I go to the Naval Post Grad School occasionally) so I'm not gonna worry.

At least until you renew?

Here, from the DMV site:
Starting January 22, 2018, the California DMV will issue two different types of cards, REAL ID Compliant DL/ID cards and Federal Non-Compliant DL/ID cards.

REAL ID Compliant DL/ID cards allow applicants to:

Use it as identification to board an airplane.
Enter military bases and most federal facilities.
Note: This card is not needed until October 1, 202

byke, you got screwed, if you did it today you would have gotten the compliant one. :twofinger
