Rainy time again ..(2019) no headlights ?

The law really is, to turn on the headlights. If the wipers are on.

Or isn't it??? I just wanted to check.

I know rain was here for a few days but I can't believe it, yesterday started noticing more...so many cars without headlights, all around , and some without rear lights in the rain (but some form of front ones)

Nothing changed did it? We still need headlights

Anyone else notice?

I see an alarming number of people driving with their headlights off AT NIGHT. You think they'd be bothered to use them in the rain too? :laughing

To that point I actually hadn't noticed as many without headlights at night. I remember because I noticed like one in the past 3-4 weeks and remembered that I noticed only one

This one literally depends on where you live

I see at least one or two people driving in the dusk without headlights on. The usual suspects are Pious drivers.

You know, every time you guys bitch about stuff people do in the Bay Area, I am so fucking glad I moved out of there. While I did notice a couple of cars with no headlights this morning, it's nothing like driving in the bay. That place is like mecca for morons.

Almost all modern cars now have LED dashboards which are on during the daytime. In the past, it was easy to tell you didn't have your headlights on; take a look down and your instrument cluster was all dark! Now, however, it's much easier to forget. Add that in with bright as fuck daytime running lights, a lot of people see light projected forward from their vehicle and assume that means they're lights are on (they're not, tail lights don't come on unless headlights are on). Additionally, "auto" headlights don't always work either, especially in the rain.

Finally, people don't realize that just because YOU can see where you're going doesn't mean you don't need your headlights on... it's not just so that YOU can see, it's so OTHERS can see YOU as well. But you're right, there are a lot of morons here.

I use intermittent wipers. Do I have to have the highlights on just for one swipe? How about a sun shower, do I need them on then? I can't keep up with California, everything needs a law, anymore.

Yes, so many people in the rain and at night with no fucking headlights on. You'd think that if you have to squint because the dashboard is blinding you it would be a clue that your headlights are not on.

These are important questions, touching on "personal" freedom!

Aside from a solution of making your own roads in your own state, I'm afraid we'd have to ask the Supreme Court on that one.

I personally use intermittent wipers too however I did not think to blame California on that issue.

Given the number of e-cars I notice doing it-it's possible that they are trying to conserve power. :dunno

And I wonder about this because I see plenty of other e-cars with their lights on.

And yet people up here also drive cars.

Aside from Deuce's, the idiots with DRL's who can't get the switch in the right position are the WORST. I hope LEO's are writing them every chance they get...

No, they're just complete idiots. They're unable to understand that when their gauge panel is lit up and nothing on the center stack/ dash is, nor center screen dimmed, they don't have their lights on. These people ARE the dumb people we talk about that can vote...

Idiots. Serious, idiots.

The newer Prius aren't as bad, but the older ones seem to always have at least one light out.

How the.hell.do.you expect regular people to notice back lighting on the car's center console ...:facepalm or the lack of it.

Seriously? :D :laughing

That's not my point about people driving without headlights. PS I have a screen so I know what changes with headlights.

But IMO, it's much much more simple.

Rain? --> car lights on.

Thanks,

What the shit is this...
Why the fuck would you not just turn them on all the time. There is zero fucking reason NOT to have your headlights on, at all times, when driving. Zero. DRL on/dark taillights fucking infuriate me. Equally culpable are the engineers, WHY THE FUCK IS THAT A MODE OF OPERATIONS!?

2 cars out of how many total that you saw? Give me a percentage of idiots in your area, and we can compare that to how many idiots there are out of 7 million bay area residents.

I'm guessing the ratio is close to the same.

I catch a lot of DUI drivers that way.

No.

24400 CVC
(a) A motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall

be equipped with at least two headlamps, with at least one on each side of the front of the vehicle, and, except as to vehicles registered prior to January 1, 1930, they shall be located directly above or in advance of the front axle of the vehicle. The headlamps and every light source in any headlamp unit shall be located at a height of not more than 54 inches nor less than 22 inches.

(b) A motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall be operated during darkness, or inclement weather, or both, with at least two lighted headlamps that comply with subdivision (a).

(c) As used in subdivision (b), “inclement weather” is a weather condition that is either of the following:

(1) A condition that prevents a driver of a motor vehicle from clearly discerning a person or another motor vehicle on the highway from a distance of 1,000 feet.

(2) A condition requiring the windshield wipers to be in continuous use due to rain, mist, snow, fog, or other precipitation or atmospheric moisture.

You are only required to have headlights on if it's raining hard...can't clearly discern another person or vehicle from 1,000 feet, and/or in a condition requiring continuous operation of the windshield wipers. In a light rain, where wipers are on timer, you aren't required to turn on headlights.

Idiots. Serious, idiots.

I stop them a lot, especially depending on location and time of night. Like I said, I've made a ton of DUI arrests by stopping drivers without lights on during darkness. But if the driver is sober, I rarely cite for it.
