Hello fellow BARFers...

well....looks like my bike had an issue...rode it today after a long week of not starting it and riding it but when i got back home, took out the keys...the lights (everything that lights up on the bike) was still on....FML

Anyone might know WTF is going on with the bike? You can start the bike without the keys in it. NO visible sign of tampering/someone trying to steal it so yeah....FML

its a '99 R6...the same one ive been riding for the past 5-6 years...seeing how i rarely ride it nowadays..i might just fix it and sell it :cry

Short of someone tampering with it, I'd say the best guess is the ignition switch has worn out and the internal contacts are shot.

Mikey, sorry to hear. Not really sure, but maybe condensation affecting electrical contacts?

Especially the ignition switch?

Ignition switch.

Some models and years of Yamahas had a recall on faulty ignition switches. Perhaps your's is one of them.

ugh...SOB...anyone have a guess on how much its gonna cost to fix? i thought i'd keep this bike for a long time but i guess not....11 hour work days/5 days a week = no riding :(

It's not that big of a deal.

Call Yamaha's World HQ down in SoCal and they can run your VIN and tell you if there were any recalls on your R6 and whether they had been performed. Maybe...just MAYBE it'll be a freebie. If not, I can't imagine it would be all that expensive or tough to replace it. You can probably ebaY one for cheap and have re-keyed.

If you replace the ignition lock, consider getting a complete lockset as well. Otherwise, you'll end up with 2 different keys.

Dude- Get can of contact cleaner and empty it into your ignition switch.

Then if it falls apart like the ignition switch has on two of my bikes- replace it with a couple hidden DPST switches.

The ignition to my BMW fell apart in my hands not to long ago. Bastard! Same thing happened to me on the ex500. And it happened in my ford, AND the fucking 71 VW.

Fuck it, I'm over replacing keyed-ignition switches.
