A nice primer. RE clutchless downshifting, while a lot of people advise against it, you can do it smoothly, with just as little damage to the transmission (none). The latest S1000RR quickshifter has a downshift function that blips the throttle for you on a clutchless downshift. Works very well. While it takes the guesswork out of how much to blip the throttle, it's also a tacit endorsement of downshifting without the clutch.
