Question for F4i Owners

I have a friend that bought a 2001 F4i with 900 (9 hundered) miles on it. When he got it, it was low on oil and the oil light was on. The oil has not been changed since it came from the factory.

So today he put more oil in it and he thinks the oil light is still on. I haven't seen it personally so I'm going off his discription. He says that when he turns the bike on, but does not start it, the oil light comes on. I think this is a normal test of the oil light. Then he says that when he starts the bike, the oil light flashes 2-3 times and then turns off. I also think this is normal but I'd like to hear from you guys.

Also, since the oil hasn't been changed, I think it should be changed asap.

Any comments welcome.

It's normal.... It stays on before you turn over the engine to let you know the light works.... After you press the starter, it should go away...

How is he checking the oil level? He should run the bike for about 5 min... Then let it sit for about 5, and check the oil while the bike it level... Also, if the oil wasn't changed, do it right away... I believe the 1st service was due at 600...

Thats what I thought. Thanks for letting me know for sure.

Also, how hard is it to change the oil? I know on my 91 Gixxer, you've got to take the headers off, is that neccessary for the F4i?

LOL!!! Hey...so sue me if I don't know anything about F4i's cause I've only had 2 91 Gixxers. Dang....if you drove Honda's all your life, do you think it would be fair to be expected to know everything there is to know about Fords?

To change the oil is very easy. First put the bike on the side stand, remove the left side fairing, remove the oil drain nut on the bottom, drain the oil, replace the nut, now remove the filter if you are replacing the filter, you may need a filter wrench or just stab a screw driver into it to turn it, once removed replace with a new one, simple as that.

ya what max said. ;)

head up the the newbies section (newbie to the site, not to riding)and introduce yourself properly. :D

oil changes are pretty easy and he should also just make sure you check all the bolts for any looseness and check the chain slack.

Ok thanks guys. Sorry if my question seemed newbie to you all, its just I've never worked on F4i's and I didn't know if you had to take the headers off to get to the oil filter. On my 86 Gixxer engine you had to and that made it "hard." Other wise I've done many oil changes and they are very simple.

I didn't post in the Newbie forum cause I didn't want some newbie to answer my question with, "Yeah it was easy, I just dropped my bike off at the dealer and picked it up one hour later."

Actually, you don't have to remove any fairings to change the oil on an F4i. You should be able to access the drain bolt and the filter without taking off any fairings.
