Question about insurance?

your parents aren't linked with the insurance policy at all??? :confused

that's really strange....

cuz yeah... progressive shouldn't be insuring you, if you are alone on the policy.

to my understanding, you must be 18 to be held in "Sui iuris" (the ability to think for oneself) to agree to contracts and the such. technically, they could say you don't have insurance provided by them as you didn't enter into a legal binding contract.

i'd definitely look into this... and it could have serious repercussions for you if something were to happen. *knock on wood* good luck with everything.

and im just telling you what i think i know, it could be wrong. maybe someone with more knowledge could chime it?

Ok, so here's the deal. I am 17 years old right now, and I am insured with Progressive. The policy is in my name.

I called a local insurance company to get a quote, and she says that it's california law that you have to be 18 to have your own insurance policy? Is this true?

Yes its true to best of my recolection and I've been working in insurace for a few years now, but if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will be more than happy to correct me.

Even though your policy may be in your name it is still probable that your parents are listed on the policy, just not as the named insureds. Its a little wierd that they would have you listed as the named insured if youre not 18 yet. Are you absolutely sure that your name is THE name on the policy ??

I am absolutely sure. Progressive doesn't even know my parent's names.

No, i'm not emancipated.

I would definatly look into this, if you are not emancipated and under 18, you cannot legally enter into binding contracts. If you get into a serious accident, you could be up shit creek, along with your parents.

WoW, thats crazy, if you live at home your parents names should be on the policy regardless of whether they drive your car or not. Even if youre over 18, anyone living in the household would need to be listed as excluded drivers. Progressive could be in deep shit if something happens.

Definately call them. Who knows, your rates might even change for the better.
