Question about 2002 Yamaha R1

So today I took the R1 out for a ride. It had been hooked up to a battery tender, started in neutral a few times a month but hasn't been ridden since Dec. '08.

Well today I started it in neutral, let her warm up a bit and engage the clutch and put in first...the bike lurches forward and stalls. This happens a couple of times and each time I have the clutch engage. When engine is off I can engage the clutch and shift from first>neutral>second...second> neutral>first, ...etc. If bike is off and in gear and clutch is engaged it won't start (tries to lurch forward). It behaves as if the clutch doesn't work. This goes on for a couple of minutes and one time I shift to first from neutral and everything is back to normal. I ride carefully around the neighborhood to make sure everything is okay. I just got back and put in around 40 miles without any problems.

So I'm wondering what could be the problem with my clutch and/or if this is a symptom of some type of (upcoming) problem with the clutch. Thanks for any help or input! :cool

+1 on the sticky clutch. Have you ever changed the friction plates? If not perhaps now would be a good time to do so.

Thank you for the feedback! I have not changed the friction plate. The R1 has ~17000 miles on it...is it time already? Is that a part of the regular maintenance?

Somewhere in my archives I have a copy of the genuine Yamaha service manual for your bike. I'll look for it and send you the CD, just PM me your mailing addy. ;)

sounds like the plates are just stuck together from sitting so long. try letting it warm up for 5 or 10 min before trying to engage the clutch. then pump the clutch lever several times before putting it in gear.

Sounds like sticking friction plates to me also, my gsxr does it sometimes also, have to pump clutch a couple of times to get it to start, especially if been sitting too long (more than a couple of weeks)

I disagree that replacing the Friction plate is part of the regular maintenance. Checking the friction plate for damage and thickness is however a regular maintenance item.

and it is not plate but plates...plural there are 7 of them.

I have over 40,000 miles on my FZR and it has the original clutch in it. The clutch in my GSXR1100 went over 70,000 miles before it needed to be replaced. I vote for them just having been sticky given it sat for a few months.

Your plates have dried out from sitting too long. On the R1, the oil filler plug is directly above the clutch so you can put oil onto it (sort of) with the engine running, the bike in neutral and somebody holding the clutch in.

Otherwise get the engine warmed up. Shut it off, bump start it in 2nd and ride it a few hundred yards with the transmission operating will circulate oil over the clutch assembly.

and yes R1 clutches last >17,000 miles.
