Quartararo Replacing Rossi

I believe Rossi's contract is up next year. Quatarao has signed with Yamaha for 2021-22. Rossi is still with the team this year. I think he will see how this year goes. If he's competitive on the new bike, I think he moves himself and his team to Petronas with full factory support. If he struggles , he retires.

Yes, next year. But I'm still surprised that Yamaha pre-announced this before Rossi has decided whether he will retire. Seems like they're kind of forcing his hand - I find it unlikely he'd accept a non-factory seat, even if he's got a factory spec bike.

According to the news releases:

Yamaha hired Quartaro on the official factory team for 2021+..

If Rossi decides to continue racing in 2021, Yamaha has agreed to provide him a factory spec bike, but not necessarily on the factory team.

Rossi is not saying he is retiring mid 2020.

Mid 2020 Rossi will decide that he will retire or not at the end of 2020.

I will be surprised if Rossi is on the grid in 2021.

It will be a big loss of marketable personality in MotoGP.

Odds are slim to none but would be nice to see Rossi get #10 then retire on a high note as the GOAT :) Fantasy YES but would be oh so sweet.

This makes sense, for Yamaha and for Rossi. I do think there is a strong chance that Rossi wins a race this year and gets on the podium 7-8 times, so long as the M1 makes an incremental step and the new Michelin rear tire "marries" the M1 harmoniously.

While there is no question that Fabio Q. impressed last year as a MotoGP rookie, I still see a big difference in being fast and being a winner. He has but a single grand prix win through his seasons in Moto3 (zero wins) and Moto2 (1 win). I thought the lack of success might be attributable to his physical size, but contrary to what I perceive on T.V., Fabio is shorter and weighs less than Rossi. Anyway, learning how to win races and how to manage a championship season are skills that Fabio has not shown. He may yet show he has the knack for winning as well as the speed, but that will be interesting to see.

Maybe somebody like Marquez! I guess I'm probably done watching MotoGP after this next season. Been a fun run.

I’m kinda done after this season unless somebody else besides a Marquez steps up. Just not entertaining. No American rider in sight. Rossi fading. Marquez’ veiled smugness is hard to watch frankly though his riding is impressive - boring nonetheless unless he’s being challenged. There needs to be something to shakedown the series a bit, not so much as to deny Marquez domination, but rather make it fun to watch? :dunno

Hmm the field is closing the gap and the fights for top 3 are epic for past few years, better racing then stereo xplane from Rossi/jlo years on m1

I have zero idea what you post-Rossi disinteresteds are talking about

I started following GP during university, using “Cycle News” & Brit weeklies to keep informed - while things ebb & flow for racing (& for us as individuals), I will be a fan til my end.....

Marquez FTW
It could open the door for someone else to become the face of MotoGP. :shrug

Marquez already is the current face of MotoGP... Rossi may be the GOAT, but he's well past his prime. He's won 1 race in the last 3 seasons. Meanwhile Marquez has won 4 championships on the bounce, and 6 of the last 7. Face it, he IS the face of MotoGP.

BTW, anyone complaining about Marquez's dominance being "boring" apparently has selective memory about what it was like when Rossi was dominating. I get it: you like Rossi and don't like Marquez. But it is far from boring to watch him ride.

This isn't about ability it's about budget and salaries. The same thing has hit many other series (two wheel and 4 wheel).

Yamaha wants to cut it's 2-wheel racing budget. Quatararo is much cheaper than Rossi.

While i agree that some it is budget related to Rossi's salary but its also about talent and results. Rossi hasn't don't much for a while and Fabio was best yamaha last year, younger talent and he will be cheaper. Seems like an easy move and the right move for yamaha.

Rossi sells way more product than anyone else would on that bike/ any bike. Racing isn't about winning, it's about promoting and MotoGP has embraced this fully.

Said, respectfully.
