Purdue Pharma to plead guilty to federal criminal charges related to opioid crisis
Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, has agreed to plead guilty to three federal criminal charges for its role in creating the nation's opioid crisis and will pay more than $8 billion and close down the company.

The money will go to opioid treatment and abatement programs. The privately held company has agreed to pay a $3.5 billion fine as well as forfeit an additional $2 billion in past profits, in addition to the $2.8 billion it agreed to pay in civil liability.
They're holding a press conference, but I'm not liking the answers to the questions.

They are touting that the company pleaded guilty to 3 felonies...but, nobody individually got charged, so WTF does a felony for a company mean?

10's of thousands of people are dead due to the actions of this company, but it looks like none of the people involved are going to serve any jail time.

Thoughts?

I'm a strong believer that if company execs don't personally face criminal charges, they have very, very little reason to curb their actions.

We've seen this play out in numerous industries.

Unfortunately, our 'justice' system chooses to shelter the Execs of companies away from the justice from the decisions they made.

The end result is the predictable choices of choosing more profits over public safety.

Absolutely nothing surprising here. The rich and corporations get an entirely different justice system than everyone else. It really, really sucks.

Barely even a light slap on the wrist.

Hell, plenty of people pay far more (percentage-wise) for a speeding ticket.

If you're going to cause deaths, do it through a corporation, very little consequences.

Go to the doctors, they say. They know best, they say.

Man it's too bad people made the personal choice to take the medicine they were prescribed. Fuck 'em if they got hooked, they're weak.

Oh and let's not forget the company is currently in bankruptcy court and lists very little assets on it's books.

So the $8B means little. There is no restitution and there will be no justice.

From the article, the Sackles have a net worth of $13.2 Billion.

Sounds like they need to be sued directly.

Privatized profits, socialize losses.

They agreed to the corporate criminal charges to protect their personal assets.

Yeah, $225M is the agreement.
Whoever agreed to that should be put in front of a firing squad.

these people are criminals and a lot of people died as a direct result of their actions.

Sounds like a 'deal' was mad with a win/win for the feds and the family with nothing of substance for the victims and their families.
