PSA-Highway 253 (Boonville Road)-Update-9/6

Update as of today (9-6-18):

Well, they are starting the "next phase", hopefully the third and last of the paving project. They are doing surface prep (roughing up the surface) for the next layer of fresh asphalt. As a recommendation, this is not motorcycle friendly once again, lots of one-way time consuming traffic controls and loose gravel everywhere (no fun at all).

They are also embarking on a comprehensive project of installing (or replacing) brand new guard rails. There are many places that have none and one small goof could send you down an uber-steep canyon slope for a long, long ways.

So, if you are planning a ride up this way, expect issues with traversing this road for a while. I will report on progress as it happens.

Dan

Update as of yesterday (8/17/18):

They are working on the second phase of the repaving project and this phase is not motorcycle friendly. It is a full scale chip seal using messy road oils and gravel. I was very surprised at this since the first layer of asphalt was very smooth and clean.

It was explained to me by one of the crew (very attractive sign holder BTW) while we were waiting for the pilot car that this is a step to assure durability and strength over the winter months. After this, the final layer of asphalt will be applied (not sure when).

Never heard of this process before but I'll take her word for it. In the meantime I am recommending that riders skip this road until they do the final paving.

Just an FYI.

Dan

A couple of things. I've lived on this road 1 1/2 miles from State street in Ukiah for nearly 20 years, so I see a lot.

1) They have just started a major repaving project, they are starting about 2 miles from State and paving up the hill. I haven't driven up to see how far they are going but I bet they are eventually going to repave the entire 16 mile run to Boonville. This has been needed for a LONG time and it really looks like they are doing it right. This is a GREAT moto road, just worn out from all the logging trucks, etc. First layer of asphalt is down, more to come.

2) If you are coming from Ukiah (State Street), be aware that the first 2 1/2 miles or so is low density housing (ranches, farms). Lots of driveways and vehicles pulling out and in, all locals. If you want to hit this road, just cool it for these first few miles and let it all hang out once you reach the base of the twisties (you will know what I mean).

This is for everyone's safety as well as harmony with the neighbors. If you cruise easy, all will be well. If you decide to hit the afterburners as soon as you turn off of State you run the risk of creating enemies (including me) and elevating risk to everyone, so please go easy at first, then have fun.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program...

Had a ambulance ride on that road about 20 something years ago. Seems like it was a little goaty then cause the emt struggled to get the IV in my arm. Good times!

Yeah, it was rough then but it has been getting rougher. Some major weather related damage has just been band-aided and patched up, not fully repaired. Let's hope they do it right this time.

It is a great road, lots of excellent twisties, just crap for pavement.

Stay away from this road. Full of gravel, potholes, motor cops, speed cameras, deer.... men with guns....

:twofinger

And as of a week ago the pavement is new from about the top over to Highway 128. Some slippy sections though with oil and greasy stuff from the new tarmac.

Wow, they are definitely repaving the entire length. Whoopee, this will be good once done.

Thanks for the update. That is one of my favorite short rides (Cloverdale 128 - Boonville 253 and back on the same route!)

They ran the pavers by our house last night (making all sorts of racket with the beep-beep-beep back-up alarms going for hours). It's a good thing, this road is going to be spectacular when they are finished.

Can't wait!

Does this work include the western portion "mountain view road"? That's my favorite Supermoto road...

As far as I know, this project is the total length of 253 from State Street in Ukiah to Highway 128 in Boonville. I haven't been on Mountain View Rd out of Boonville to the coast in quite awhile, the last time I rode it the surface was pretty "goaty".

Right on. I was gonna hit it today but got lazy and cut it short and hit Skaggs instead.

Saw two downed riders today, kind of a shit show out there.

Sorry to hear about the downed riders, hope nobody got hurt too bad.

I'll keep posting on progress here. Once the ribbon is cut I will announce so everyone can enjoy the new pavement. It should be fantastic.

I get to go first though...

This post for those who ride over 253 over the next month.

I have a group of riders heading north for a few day riders late in September and would like an update if they are chip-sealing over the new payment.

I just never heard of chip sealing over new payment and and a new layer of payment over that.

I've never heard of that either (chip sealing over new pavement), seems weird to me.

I drove the length of 253 from State Street in Ukiah to the junction with 128 in Boonville this past Sunday. The road is fairly clean and free of loose gravel, the traffic (including logging trucks) have worked-in the gravel and they have regularly run street sweepers for the rest.

I would recommend taking your group over this road and just have a bit of a lookout for any loose gravel (I don't expect there will be any).

The very good news is that they have smoothed out the many, many defects and asphalt dislocations that were weather related. It is a joy to travel from Ukiah to Boonville now.

For those of us who had to accept the increased craziness of many roads in the Santa Cruz Mountains, that road from Ukiah to Boonville has ALWAYS been a joy no matter what the pavement. :laughing

And, thanks for the updates.

We have it good up here. Hard to beat our local loop of Ukiah-Boonville-Ft. Bragg-Willits-Ukiah and now it’s all golden pavement.

...and don't forget Branscomb Rd, the west end of it has recently been repaved and it is also golden. This road runs from Laytonville to the coast.
