My Catahoula, Truckee. State dog of Louisiana, I didn't even know there was such a thing:laughing. They use them for herding feral pigs and cattle. Best dog I have ever owned but when she was young, she could be a bit of a handful. Endless energy and not very friendly until she knows you. 15years and cancer have slowed her down now.

Awesome, awesome pics everyone...I love pits, and yeah I'm planning on either a rescue or raising one from puppy status. I live in an apartment right now and don't see that changing in the next few years so I'm planning on something small-medium sized, I have a fair size 1 bedroom 833 sq ft and will likely be moving in with a couple friends in a few months to a 3 bedroom. Place has dog play areas on the grounds, very pet friendly and I'm really close to the marina here in San Mateo/Foster City. There's a couple dog parks around too, and I want something small enough to keep in my apt but big enough to take for runs. Short hair and minimal shedding, and something relatively healthy not one of the breeds prone to health issues. Currently, although I love full size pits, rots, german shephards, huskies, akitas...I can't handle the size or shedding right now. Soooooo I really like the look of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or the mini bull terriers, or maaaaaaaybe a boston terrier. The staffi terrier would be my first choice right now, but I'm only just starting to look so I dunno for sure yet. I still have a few months before I'd be in a position to get one anyway, so plenty of time to research around.

Btw Max - I've never seen a dog looking quite so forlorn as that last pic with you(?) holding him up out of the water lol.

He was scared to death and I have the scars to prove it :laughing

At this point I had no idea if he'd ripped my flesh or what, but I was also laughing because it was sorta funny (and I got what I deserved)

Another one of my favorites :D (I just love saying "Catahoula Leopard Dog"

My poor yellow lab is so sore today, I had to lift her outta bed. My black lab just keeps messing with her and taunting her with their rope.

Pits are not supposed to be large dogs. The large ones you see have usually been mixed with other large breeds to make them larger because of the trend of everyone want a large Pitbull. If you look at the dogs that came from the Vick compound (many need a home!) they are all smaller dogs, not these crazy 100 pound dogs you see people chaining up in their backyard.

While I absolutely hate the idea of dog fighting, understanding the Pit past really helps you to understand them. The fighters were smaller dogs and were very passive when it comes to humans, they were also very common family pets because they could be trusted around small children since all human aggression was bred out of them. They can sometimes be trouble with other dogs, that was what they were bred for. My Corinne has no dog aggression, but that isn't always the case and you just have to learn your pups temperment. They have short fur and do not shed much. That said, they should not be outdoor dogs. They have short fur to keep cool in a fighting match, so they really hate being in the cold. My little Corinne is about 40 pounds and shares a house with a 60 pound pup, 3 cats, and a ferret. She is the gentlest creature in the house out of all of them, and wants to spend all of her day in your lap or your bed, which makes me happy.

If you do adopt a pit, you are going to lie about what breed (s)he is. Find out what your apartments rules on breeds are and lie about what kind of mix (s)he is that isn't on that list. Some of the lists are absolutely ridiculous to the point that the only dog you may be able to have is some uncommon breed that no one has (which is why it didn't make the list). I have seen lists that ban Chihuahua's and Dachshunds too. Corinne is a Poodle mix :D

One of the single greatest things to happen in my life is adopting Corinne. It may seem crazy, but she brings me more happiness then anything else in my life and I have been married for 11 years. She was rescued from the Oakland shelter after a fighting ring was broken up and weighed only 17 pounds just a bag of bones when she came to my wifes hospital in Alameda. If she can get passed being locked up in a room with a bunch of dead fighting dogs and left to starve and be the angel that she is, then we can get passed the fact that she is a Pit.
