1978 CB550 Resto-Mod

Here are some updated pics of my ride. Haven't had the bike that long, but mods to date include:

  • bare metal tank with clear coat
  • remove tank and side cover badges
  • new 'euro' handlebars, grips, and bar end mirrors
  • new custom seat
  • new bullet style turn signals
  • new smaller tail light
  • new brakes front and rear

I'll continue to tweak and experiment, but I'm pretty happy with where it's at right now. Cheers

Very nice

Where did you source those loverly pipes?

The seat is also well done

My bone-stock K0 CB500-4 was a sweet bike all 'round and yours is way better

Thanks, Curt. The pipes/exhaust are stock...the originals that came on the bike. The PO cut them off at the ends right at the seams where the end cones were attached, so they've definitely been modified. I had the seat made by Nate at his shop Vinyl-Lux in Minneapolis...he does great work.

Nice honda and Laverda.
Appropriate juxtaposition, because supposedly Sr. Laverda styled the 750 engine after Honda's.
The first time I ever saw a Laverda was around 1972 in Berkely. I thought at the time that Honda had copied Laverda.

well played, Sir !

IIRC, it was at the 2012 European & Asian Show [next to the All British Show]

after taking a look at the the 2 entry lists, I cajoled the organizers into putting a Super Hawk next to a Laverda twin

there was no Honda 500/550-4 to place against the Benelli Sei which was present......

because the Brit bikes were in another building, also no Kawasaki copy of a '60s Bonneville, nor Honda's GB500 homogenized version of a Velocette/BSA/Norton single

while there've always been models 'inspired' by preceding, iconic motos, few in recent memory were closer copies than this pair of Italian Hondas

How about old vintage pre 1980 & a bikes of the 80's catogory

How about old vintage pre 80's & a bikes of the 80's category. I really liked all the various models from the 80's (VT500 Ascot,86 FZ750,V45 interceptor,FJ600&1100,GPZ750 turbo) as well as the real old 30's-70's classics. I just love two wheels period.

P.S. On a side note...I really miss that 1967 CB160 my dad gave us when I was 12 yrs old. I rang that poor thing out. Looking back I guess we shouldn't have been jumping it and treating it like we did, but we were kids having fun. I remember seeing a little over 100mph on the speedo a few times. I still remember the sound of the two straight pipes...real throaty. I hope to get one someday for old times sake.

We've got a week and a half left for people to get their votes in on what we consider to be vintage.

There used to be a member of OVM who had a Benelli Sei.
He had put Honda 550 rocker adjuster covers on it just to show how closely Benelli borowed from Honda in creating their multi 's.

FZ1, the rose colored view of our youth (and the optimism of Honda speedometers back in the day). Those nifty little CB160 racebikes that are so popular these days are clocked at about 95 mph on a long straight. That's after some serious performance mods.
