That's different than what I usually do. I like your backroad idea, staying off I-5.

Ive almost always gone to Red Bluff, stayed at El Cheap Motel, ridden to Fort Bragg, by way of Leggett, stayed overnight at FortBraggElCheapo, had breakfast then ridden home via 128-101 .
Enjoy the ride, i have no suggestions, except that Hwy 3 is pretty fun, right off 36, but goes north.
Last time I rode Alderpoint, it was pretty macked up, lots of potholes and gravelish. That was in Sept of 2016, so... they might have repaved it...but prolly not.

Heading out tomorrow morning for a 2-day (900 miles) loop of 36 and 299. Thanks for the weekend construction info!

Going to wind through Boonville, Comptche, Alderpoint and Zenia on the way, then do a big loop of 36 and 299 via some goat roads.

Just did Alderpoint road from Garberville through Zenia and down to Ruth Lake last weekend two-up. It's gorgeous no doubt. Super remote. Some gravel sections along the way, some VERY rough road, some sweet smooth solitary pavement too. Doable on any bike if you're in the mood for that sort of thing, but just be aware of the conditions. Definitely don't miss the Ruth Lake turnoff and swing round it and back up Mad River to 36.

Also the Forks of Salmon loop is in great shape and worthy of a day. Dotty's in Etna is yummy afterward.

I second Forks of Salmon. One of my favorites. A good place to go skinny dipping too, when the weather is hot enough! :cool

You can't ride the Forks of the Salmon, from 96 to 3, due to road construction on the forks about 5 miles from 96. The sign said 'closed till July 15' when I was there Wednesday. You could do a loop, from Etna and back to Callahan, though.

Since we will be in Weaverville, we'll ride up 3 to Callahan, then left to Cecilville, gas up http://www.cecilville.com/ , and head back the way we came. Once we get back to Weaverville it's party time! Bring on the ice cream!

Plus, we’ll be there AFTER the 15th, from July 20-22. :teeth

I was thinking of doing this, but going ask the way in to forks and then up to Etna. How is the road to Etna?

I'm planning on doing a similar trip the second week of June. Post up a report if you go before then!

My loose plan was 1 day to Trinidad, Day two 36 to Lassen and back through Shasta to Trinidad. Day 3 Forks of Salmon. Day 4 back to SF.

Although it sounds like the west entry to Forks of Salmon is closed right now. :(

Has anyone done the Mattole Rd loop out along the coast through Ferndale and Honeydew? It looks fun on a map.

That's what we did a week ago. Weaverville to Callahan to FoS then back out to Etna and gas and a burger at Dotty's before heading home. Had an awesome thunderstorm on the pass. Crazy good riding. Like religious experience type stuff.

Crap, it's that bad? Looking at google maps in various places it looked to be all paved, and I've had google recommend it.
