so, we picked up a puppy a few weeks ago. his name is jake, and he's a blue great dane. he's 14 weeks old now and weighs about 40 lbs, and is expected to weigh around 150 lbs when full-grown. he's a sweetheart - all he wants to do is sit on us or be as close as possible to us wherever we are. he's fairly mellow, even as a puppy, which is why i wanted a great dane to begin with (they're calm, loyal dogs who want to be around their family/"pack" all the time).

we've taken him to the track already, and he does just fine - he isn't bothered or scared by the noise as we had thought he might. he'll be a regular track dog by the time winter comes!

here's a site with some pictures of him - i have a few more to add/update later this week:

wonderful addition Marianne! I first want my rottie, but the tan w/ mask dane dog is on my list to keep one day. Just be sure to get a picture of Jake when he starts to sit (like a person) on the couch!! Oh, and have fun w/ the poop patrol! :laughing

we don't have a very big yard now, but live close to a 6+ mile walking path. hopefully we'll have a big yard eventually! :)

yes, his ribs are quite evident, but he's not a big eater, surprisingly enough. i'm used to dogs wolfing down their food all at once, but he'll only eat a bit, then sit down, then nibble on it for a little while. i sure hope he's not a finicky eater, 'cause he's already getting the good iams eukanuba stuff! he loves treats, though - but these are given only occasionally since his diet is important as he's growing. anyway, the vet has given him a clean bill of health, saying that he'll be lean like this while he grows so quickly until he's around 9 months old or so.

cacowgirl3: he's already jumping up on the couch, though he's not allowed on the furniture (he immediately gets down when i enter the room, knowing that this is off-limits - he's a bit of a stinker already!). formal obedience training is already in his near future!

Is it summer yet?
Cute puppy. I love danes. My oldest girl's first playmate was a blue Great Dane. Great dogs. Just remember to switch him to adult food sometime between 4 and 6 months so that he doesn't grow too fast.

What a beautiful Dane puppy! Congratulations! I use to have a deaf Harliquin Dane that I trained with hand signals and a water squirt gun. The breeder was in the process of putting him down and I asked her if I could keep him instead.

NOW...hiding a Great Dane from your mom is another story! :laughing

eddiemcrider - contrary to popular belief, Danes actually doesn't need a large yard. Because they're not active as a jack(crack dog) russell, a dane is perfectly fine in an apartment setting...assuming the building allows big dogs. :laughing

Again, congratulations r6girl!
