Pet peeve: oil leaks

I’ve been checking out some used Triumph Daytona’s lately and it seems like they are all leaking a bit of oil - around the oil pan, dipstick or clutch arm. I spoke to a Triumph mechanic and lurked into the Triumph forums and it seems like it’s a norm for these Daytona’s to be leaking? Is this true story?

My KTM 790 has leaked a bit too. The dealer said it was the countershaft seal, but there was still a little bit of oil after they supposedly fixed that. Looks like something more from the front of the engine. Can't really tell, because it drips onto the skid plate, so it's difficult to tell where it came from. Haven't seen any for a couple of months, so maybe it fixed it self.

My friend has owned several street triples (couple 675's and a 765). They all leaked oil from day one... from everywhere (oil pans, valve covers, clutch covers).

Meanwhile, the Suzaki VStrom 650 doesn't leak a drop in 80,000 miles.

Ask me about my B-1-D
if they STOP leaking, then it is time to worry, because they might be out of oil
(old joke about leaky bikes, glad to be able to reuse it today ha ha!)

Dang, my bike hasn't marked a spot yet, but my scrammy is short one jug. :thumbdown

Must be the one that leaks :teeth

I am honestly surprised. In this day and age how difficult can it be to engineer a seal that doesn't leak? Poor manufacturing tolerances or assembly technique? :confused

2013 Daytona here and runs flawlessly every time. No leaks or any problems. They do come out of the factory with loose bolts. They need to be checked and torqued to spec.

I know some Daytona owners were having a small leaks on the countershaft seal. A new Viton sprocket seal fix that right up.

I haven't figured it out either. Like how my old (2014) ducati was notorious for cracking header pipes. I think it all comes down to lack of quality control and probably lack of testing resources.

Or maybe it's because triples vibrate so much. My dad's an engineer and said that triples can't be balanced so they run into all sorts of problems.

I was told that the seals needed replacement after one use, or it will leak. New rocker box seals with valve check, my twin doesn't leak.

I’ve been really tempted to buy one of those for a while now. What other issues you’ve been having?

Main thing is engine stalling 2-5 seconds after coming to a stop, maybe 15% of the time. Also stalls sometimes when idling for a few minutes. This is all in cool weather and a medium temperature engine (not running hard). They’ve tried to fix it twice. I’m about to take it back in, if they can’t fix it this time I’m done with the bike.

Quick shifter recall
Gearbox issues
Front brake pad recall. Won’t blame Triumph for that.
Front brake squeal. Was bad before replaced front pads but not it’s a constant squeal at low speeds.

It’s an awesome bike otherwise. The stalling and constant brake squeal (Triumph says is normal to squeal all the time) is enough for me to try something else.

Never had a bike that leaked, that includes Triumph STR 675, SPD 1050, 2 KTMs, 1 Ducati, 3 Kawis and even a Suzuki. Well I had a Husky 610 that gleaked a bit of oil but that's because I messed up the valve cover gasket and a new one fixed that.

The dog and the Fuso overlander both tend to leak a bit, tho.
