Yes, I know doing dual boot through bootcamp is free, and I already have one laptop set up that way, but I want to set up the other one so that we can switch between Windows 10 and OSX on the fly without re-booting.

Any preference on which virtual machine software to use? Parallels or VM Ware Fusion?

My friend uses unraid server to spin up VMs. He says it's very easy to use, and very little performance penalty.

I should have specified, this is for my wife's laptop. She has some specific windows only software she has to run if she wants to work from home. Trying to make it easy for her.

My dual and triple boot shenanigans on my own laptops sometimes frustrate the hell out of people. :p

I'm in the Fusion camp. Way easier then Parallels and being able to drag/drop from one OS to another is pretty dope.

I've used Parallels with very good results. I forget what they call it, but there is a mode where you can run Windows apps side by side with Mac ones. And cut/paste between them (for the most part).

The only real challenge was mapping keyboard shortcuts win/mac. But once it was dialed in it was impressively smooth, considering that there were two very different OS running apps side by side.

Fusion or Virtbox.

I set my Dad's wife with up with a p2v conversion w/ fusion from her old XP machine.

I've used Virtual box on the PC and have like it (the only thing I could get to run OS/2 Warp 4 server on- just for kicks). :nerd

Edit- I have not tried running Win10 on it (VMW fusion). Do your research. Win Server 2012 in the enterprise version (ESXi) has a few issues with network adapters.

The entire VMware Fusion and Workstation development teams were laid off back in January. just a FYI in case you need support.

Members of VMware's "Hosted UI" team—the developers responsible for the virtualization company's Workstation and Fusion desktop products—were apparently laid off on Monday as part of a restructuring of the company that was announced yesterday. The developers were just a part of a larger layoff as the company moved to cut costs and brought aboard a new chief financial officer.

"VMware… announced a restructuring and realignment of approximately 800 roles," a company spokesperson said in a press release Monday, "and plans to take a GAAP charge estimated to be between $55 million and $65 million related to this action over the course of the first half of 2016. The company plans to reinvest the associated savings in field, technical and support resources associated with growth products."

In a blog post, Christian Hammond, a former member of the Hosted UI team, reported the layoff, along with concerns about the future of the "award winning and profitable" desktop virtualization products. "VMware lost a lot of amazing people, and will be feeling that for some time to come, once they realize what they’ve done," Hammond wrote. "It’s a shame. As for our team, well, I think everyone will do just fine. Some of the best companies in the Silicon Valley are full of ex-VMware members, many former Hosted UI, who would probably welcome the chance to work with their teammates again."

When contacted to comment, a VMware spokesman said that the company was committed to continuing development and support for Fusion and Workstation and that the company was "transitioning the Fusion and Workstation teams to co-locate" with the rest of the company as part of its reorganization. "Our commitment to Fusion and Workstation products is unchanged," he said.

On my win7 work laptop I'm using vmware and it runs pretty well for various linux distros.
