That is cool, but not unprecedented.

I'm pretty sure at this stage of the game they are qualified to work in a Comcast Call Center.

I think crows use rocks to break shit. They know how to use roads to drop shellfish on, or maybe that's seagulls.

Crows can also figure out filling a glass of water with rocks to raise the water level to the point they can drink.

IMO octopi still take the cake for smartest animals though after monkeys who’ve learned sign language and whatnot.

Yeah, they are just not that visible in the world, but they are weirdly smart, or perhaps adaptable beyond belief considering their ranking in the animal world.

I have this weird mental list of animals that don't seem "of this world" or more imaginatively, genetically altered by aliens or some shit. Octopi, hyenas and water bears come to mind. The last of course, the most extreme example.

otters also use rocks to crack open shellfish etc.

I guess the big deal is that they didn't do this before, and now some of them do it, and some of them are teaching others to do it.

Someone leave some loaded Glocks here and there in the jungle and THEN this might become an interesting story.

I think im more impressed that they figured out to put the nuts on a hard surface, an anvil.

I wonder what confidence the scientists have in when the monkeys started doing this. within the past year? past 10? I also wonder if they learned it from humans.

I know the debates on this forum aren't always smart, but my money still goes to homo sapiens as being the smartest animals. We're so smart, we often deny that we're even animals.

Octopi for mod, well maybe for the political forum

Forum mod. Let's not get carried away here now.

yeah also it's like he/they are processing the nuts, grabbing a bunch and bringing it to the 'anvil'.

good questions. the article implies they've figured it out by themselves, and it's only a small population of them that can actually do it. but not overtly stated I think.
