Paging All Commuters

Paging all commuters who are still going, in spite of the smoky conditions. Are you riding with a mask under your helmet? If so, what's working for you?

I commute a little over 90 miles a day and was doing the bandana under full-face helmet and that's been mostly OK. (Yeah, yeah, I know bandanas don't filter out the particulates in the air.) This morning, though, was horrendous and I'm thinking I need a new set up so I don't end up coughing my way through my morning meetings while we still have smoke in the forecast.

I'm wearing a mask today. Just kinda stuff it under my helmet and make sure its as tight as my face as possible.

Yep. Currently using an RZ Mask with their F2 filter. Fits way better than the standard hardware store N95 mask I previously used, although the latter still does the job if you need an immediate solution.

No. Though I stayed home today. Annoying cough, probably from the smoke.

I guess I could try to get a mask under one of my FF helmets. Doesn't seem promising.

I can't do it. I was home sick yesterday, I think from it. Today, rolled the cage with cabin-filter.

I’ve been wearing a balaclava due to the cold and it’s been working as far as not smelling any smoke so far. Going to try and wear a mask over it and under my full face cause I don’t think the balaclava will really help in terms of particulates.

>50 miles roundtrip up and down the peninsula on 101, 5 days a week on the moto. ~60-90 minutes total exposure time per day.

I haven't been using any masks/filters under my FF helmet. Probably not the wisest thing, but that said I don't feel like I'm any worse off than I am when I'm NOT riding in the smoke.

One (disturbing) thing I've noticed is I seem to be getting more dinks and doinks of itty bitty things bouncing off my helmet at highway speed. Assuming that's the larger particulates from the fire...

Nope I figure the cagers are still much more dangerous to me than the smoke.

:rolleyes

Presumably you make it home without being hit most days, yes? You're still breathing super-shitty air those days, so your logic is rather flawed.

Riding 6+ hours a day, mask up buttercups!

With my windproof neck gator thingy, I can't fit a mask under my helmet. I am wearing an N95 mask at work because our HVAC filters are complete shit though. :mad

Nothing will block the smoke unless you get a proper mask. Riding/Driving is the same as sitting in your house. You're house can't filter out the bad air. Might as well just except this smoke unless you want to wear a mask 24/7.

Heck I'm sitting in a brand new multi million dollar facility and we can smell smoke in the building.

Put a mask on! Even if you don't smell smoke, the particulates are in the air and you're breathing them in.

I'm using a standard 3M N95 mask under my FF.

I use the Respro. It fits just barely under my full face but there's a tight seal. Even in smoke-free seasons, I don't like to breathe exhaust fumes splitting lanes 2 hrs a day.

Uhhh, that mask does not filter harmful exhaust fumes, just particulates.
