This was the best motorcycle news all year. Hopefully my wife doesn’t hate me for spending Labor Day weekend at the track...

Most intense track weekend I've ever been to!! Story time :ride

We started Friday night chatting with PTT and Catalyst Reaction folks and watching the last two MotoGP races that I missed (holy shit! The bike flying in front of VR! and the ending of the next one!). Good times with great people :thumbup

First time I take the R3 to Sonoma, found the perfect track for this bike! Catalyst got me some Andreani cartridges and K-Tech shocks, it made that R3 fly through the turns! First day was great except for our friend "Mr. E", he crashed his Panigale on turn 6. It is hard to see a wrecked Panigale (can't post pics, don't know if he's OK sharing them). First time for "Ms. A" riding (below, black leathers, blue gsxr) the 750 at Sonoma. I am behind on the R3 taking video of her.

Second day started really good, "Ms. A" decided to try B group for the first time. Her pace picked up considerably. "Mr. E" following behind on his backup Panigale taking video of all. She is at center of pic, I am following on the right, blue R3, red/white/black leathers.

All was good till it wasn't. I picked a PTT staff rider to get a tow (more of a challenge to try to catch up at the turns with the slow R3), and it went good, he was chilling and I was getting my challenge.

Until I get to turn 6, he seems to go wide and I decide to go tight to try to gain on him. Cut it a bit too tight and front wheel touched the painted curbing. I was told by a friend they are OK to touch, they should grip as good as the track. Nope. It does not. :thumbdown

Day was done for me, time to be a pit bitch for "Ms. A" and "Mr. E". That is until "Ms. A" does not return from the track. I get told she hit the wall at the exit of turn 9 (bus stop?). Cannot believe it, how is it possible to hit the wall at the exit of turn 9? Get me that gopro, I need to see that... :wow

Yup. It is possible to hit the wall at the exit of turn 9. She is OK, bruises and maybe a lesson learned. Bike shape is unknown, will likely have to take it to GP Frame to measure the frame and forks. Day was done, we got there with 3 shiny bikes and we return with three wrecked machines and good stories to tell. Good times!! :teeth

Thanks to the PTT guys for throwing such a great event and giving us so much help when needed! :thumbup

Sorry about the crash fest for you two. Crashing sucks! Glad you're both ok (looks like it from the videos and from your comments, anyways).

My take:

Your crash - was in T7, not 6. And it wasn't the paint that got you, it was the rumble strip that got you. In the video you can see how you got in there a little too far and it disrupted your front end as you were initiating your turn in. You were probably also still on the brakes (maybe not). If you were, then that would've used up traction, and also loaded your suspension, leaving it even less ability to comply with a sudden bump - which is what hitting the curbing/rumble strips does. So you lost the front and low sided (and came away pretty well for it, too - which is good).

How to avoid? Get your braking done before you turn in. And don't get in that tight on that corner. (Oh, and the guy you were following that you said took a wide line instead of a tight line? There are two lines through there. Smaller bikes can get away with the tight line, but you need to apex a little later, and tip in hard. That may have contributed to your dump. The PTT guy took a classic big bike line through there).

Re Ms A's crash - that was a scary looking one:wtf. Glad she's ok.

Looks to me like she got a little too aggressive on the gas on exit of 9a, causing the rear end to step out a bit, and that set up a wiggle. She got her left foot off the peg to catch the fall (SR#1) (see Keith Code, SR (survival reaction)); and also started staring at the wall that she didn't want to hit (SR#2 in this example). Fortunately she hadn't gotten the bike up to a very high speed yet when all that started, so she didn't hit the tires going very fast. Phewew

How to avoid? Seat time will help. Dirt biking would really help her get used to the feeling of the rear end stepping out, and learning the discipline to not chop the throttle, and continue to look where you want to go. Look where you want to go is key here. Even with a foot off the peg she could've easily kept the bike on the track if she'd simply kept looking up toward T10.

Love that you got such great pics and video of this; and are willing to share it here. Invaluable for learning - for you and anyone else who sees it, too. :thumbup :ride

HOLY SHIT. I came out of 9 right after this happened and two thoughts crossed my mind- 1) Holy shit are they okay, and 2) HOW?

Glad everyone is okay. Looked like it could have been bad.
