out of state plates/cheaters program

does the 'report out of state plates' program work?

there's someone who's been enforcing various petty rules making life difficult for me and my neighbors. yet they have out of state plates. i reported them many months ago on the chp web site, to no effect.

this post (in a thread which went sideways) suggests it's not active as of at least early last year:

did the chp give up on the program? should i call the 800 number or something to ask?

Not where I live it doesn't. Won't bore you with details, suffice to say- multiple reports over months, 'nada action.

Riddle me this.
It's dependent on resources. If I find them on patrol, I impound them.

We have senior volunteers who actively investigate "Cheaters" and relay that information to our office. And once in a blue moon, one of our officers will be able to go out and find those cars and subsequently impound them. But I'm not aware of any designated units that prioritize it.

Were I particularly passionate about it, I'd stop by the local office and state my grievance, and provide the location and license plate information of the offenders.

it is petty. if they weren't doing petty things to hurt me and others i wouldn't report them.

the website suggests that they'll do some sort of 'reminder'/'enforcement' system. which presumably could be automated. look up info from plate, mail nastygram. wait for response?

i guess it's a good thing that most places don't have license plate records? but i know there's many many license plate recorders out there in various towns and toll bridges etc. which they could use to correlate--'this car has crossed the bay bridge every day for 12 months. what do you mean it's only being used in oklahoma?'

I know parking abatement works. If their vehicles don't move for a few days, report them. Also, not sure if out-of-state plates count as "unregistered"...

Nah they can still run the plate through whichever state it's plated under's DMV. As long as it's reg is up-to-date there, it's "legally" registered. Can confirm about parking abatement.

Cars with out of state plates are in danger of being impounded on the spot? Or is that assuming the 20 days have passed?

I know there's a company in Oakland with work trucks registered in Oregon. I've called on them a few times and I still see the truck on my commute, 5 years later.

6 months. People with out of state plates are notorious for pretending registration doesn't exist. There's an area I patrol where I'll regularly find them 2+ years overdue.

Are you sure they aren't active duty military? I have out of state plates because I'm a legal resident in the state that my plates are from and I'm not required to change them as long as I'm still a resident of that state. Now, if I were to get a ca drivers license and become a ca resident, I would have to change my plates.

I also keep them up to date.

How many days out of a year are you living in California?

I've gotten used to out of state plates living in FF/VV outside of Travis AFB. Military exempted.
The law covers how long (10 days ?) before you are required to register if moving to Ca as a resident.
As a full time RV guy registered in South Dakota now, how long can I visit Ca before I overstay?

I'm planning to move to NV soon and will be commuting back and forth since my wife will still be living and working here for the next several years. Once I get 6 months of time in NV I will be applying for a DL there and switching all my vehicles to NV registration. All of our vehicles are in my name. So even though I plan to spend just over half my time in NV I will be saving a considerable amount on my 5 cars and 3 motorcycles. The registration on just my 1 ton van is almost $1000 a year. The previous 20 year old 1 ton van was still $370 a year when I sold it.

Of course I will be following the law by being a NV resident and living there half the year, unlike some people who just fake it. I know it seems like a lot of work to avoid paying a few thousand bucks, but I'm going to NV anyway so its just one of the benefits besides lower taxes, better gun laws, and way more house/land for your money.

Merely Rhetorical
I recall when I was kid and moved from NC to CA, I was told there was some kind of deal where we could keep the NC plates for a whole year.

Is that fiction and if not, is there some arrangement like that for other states?

I see a lot of out-of-state plates commuting now. I once counted more than 5 plates at once. The other day I came up to a hog run. They were running staggered and in the split without splitting. I was getting irritated until I noticed the out-of-state plates, so I went around with a :thumbup
