[raises hand] Wife and I play in a regular game. We both played as kids and started again around 5 years ago. Now we have been doing online and it works pretty well.

What is the online medium of choice for everybody? Zoom had some hard stop at like 40 minutes or something too short for DnD. We were using Google Hangouts and it was decent and free. Switched to the new Google Meets and it is doable but neither one of those can get Chromecasting audio correct (would make for a much better experience).

Roll20.net works VERY well. It's WebRTC so all video/audio connections are point-to-point (no server lag.) Discord is another option.

I totally respect people who play DND but I don't think the open nature and reliance on a DM would make the experience something I'd be interested in.

I’m now wondering if kids will eventually move on to Magic the Gathering.

I dug out some of my old cards (mid-to-late 90's, and a few from a brief revival ~2012) and taught my daughter (6) how to play about 3 weeks ago. She LOVES it. She will happily play games and re-build cards into new decks all day long. On one hand, it's great to have someone to play these games from my childhood with. On the other hand... what have I created!?

That depends on how 'into it' she gets. Playing the game and gradually adding cards, It's a hobby that maybe costs a couple hundred a year which really isn't that bad. Following the game, playing the competitive 'seasons' and all of that, It can cost a lot more.

Which means at just about the most expensive, it costs fractions of what the hobby this forum is dedicated to costs.

D&D saved my life, I am quite sure of it.

I have one buddy I have been playing with for about 25 years pretty much continuously. We used to try and get together 1-2 times a month with a pretty good gang, but since SIP, we have been every Saturday night.

I have long advocated against online gaming, because for me, part of the draw has always been the healthy, stable social environment that is keeping me from doing the biker shit I might otherwise be doing. Online has been a decent and fun distraction that has also allowed us to include two friends that had moved to Ohio and Colorado in the past couple of years.

We use Roll20+Discord and it has been surprisingly enjoyable to me. It makes the game remarkable accessible for new players, because much of the technical aspects of the game are automated using the software.

+1, I'm playing with friends in TX and NM which wouldn't have worked in the past. It's not a bad experience, but yeah, I prefer the in-person. Easier to keep folks' attention. :D

Glad to hear ya'll are having fun with it, and that it helps you keep on making those real-life saving throws. Tymora knows we could all use the help.
